Lindsay Davenport. - Can she be #1 again?

Seven or eight months ago Lindsay was world #1. She lost that position through injury not defeat. She was without a GS title in 2001, but only Venus Williams and Jennifer Capriati can take much comfort in that. The tour may seem like a whole new place, but for Lindsay, it's pretty much the same.

Justine Henin is performing at a higher level than last year.
Serena Williams is performing at a MUCH higher level than last year.
Martina's been injured.
Jenn, Venus and Kim are off a bit.
Monica, Jelena and Amelie are much the same.

It's pretty much the same top ten, in the same order, adjusting for Serena going from #6 to #1. Which means that if Lindsay is as good as she was when she got hurt, #2 is a reasonable goal. And if #2 is a reasonable goal, #1 is possible. And if she can't solve the Williams sisters, there's still #3. After all, who else is any better than they were seven months ago? Justine, but she's not THAT much better. Everyone else s pretty much what they were, (hoping for Martina). Lindsay's likely to be just as good as ever if the knee holds up. Recent pictures of her show a Lindsay leaner than in her slam years. That bodes well.

A leaner, faster Lindsay Davenport with better endurance.
Sounds a bit like Venus. eh?

cybelledarkholmexx - I know it seems unlikely, but you have to admit that #3 should be totally achievable. Except Justine and Serena, who's BETTER than they were last year? And Lindsay was #1 last year. It's not an outrageous idea.

Lindsay does not have to get to #1 by the end of the year, just whenever, the defending points dont mean anything

It's all up to Lindsay. If she believes she can match the sisters power for power and challenge them at their current level, there is no reason why she cannot reclaim the top ranking.

But as was mentioned she faces an uphill battle after the US Open. Not to say she should not try and match her 2001 fall results, but her biggest chance will be in 2003.

Not that I dont think she can do it, becaue its possible.

Things in lindsays favor:

1) venus and serena will most likely attend school in the fall
2) martina is still out.
3) Jen is not having the year she did last year

Things against linds

1) she's just comeback from an injury, major rust
2) serena is on another level
3)the top four are pretty secure

but she has to rebuild her rank, she missed over half a year, she will be defending nothing next year!!!
it is all up hill starting next year, even if she doesnt defend half of the indoor season points!!!

she has plenty of time

Annnnd I'm back, probably for at least a minute.

Aside from any physical hinderance, I think motivation may become Lindsey's biggest challenge.

She can do it... but I think right now, she'll be more concerned with maintaining her rank... by next year, this time, she may be as high as number 2 or even 1 simply because she does well at the slams and plays more tournaments than Venus or Serena and she wins a good deal of those that Venus or Serena don't play, so why not?

VENUS
Serena
Lindsay Jelena Maria

Mary : Monica : Svetlana : Sania : Jennifer : Amelie
Roddick : Grosjean : David : Djokovic

Of all the players challenging the Williams sisters, I think that Lindsay is perhaps the only one that can contend with them. She has the game with the big serve and big groundstrokes to make inroads into their great defence.

Of course, she will probably lose to them more often than win (it's partly mental I think but even then Serena and Venus are still way above everyone else anyway).

However, she rarely loses to anyone else and is very consistent in all tournaments - no.1 is not unattainable, we saw Lindsay get to no.1 last year without a slam, we could see it again.

The only problems though are that Lindsay has loads to defend for the next six months so she'll have to wait. Also, if Serena keeps winning everything then no one else is going to even get near no.1.

She can but it won't be this year, she has too many points to defend.
