Venus & Jankovic battle excites Thai tennis fans
[TENNIS] The on-going battle between World No 9 Venus Williams and World No 3 Jelena Jankovic has created a lot of interest amongst Thai tennis fans, resulting in a spurt in ticket sales as the 2 players are seeded to meet in the final of the US$200,000 PTT Bangkok Open, which will be staged at the LTAT National Tennis Development Centre, Muangthongthani from 6 -14 October 2007.
The score currently stands at 2 - 1 this year in favour of Jankovic, whose closely fought 3-set wins, came on clay at Charleston and at the French Open. Williams gained a measure of revenge last week when she upset Jankovic again in 3 tight sets on the hard courts at the US Open.
The two players are not scheduled to compete again in the same tournament until Bangkok, where Jankovic is likely to be the top seed and Williams the 2nd seed, which means there is a very strong probability of them resuming their battle in the final of the tournament.
There is also another possible rematch on the cards as both last year's winner Vania King from the USA and runner-up Tamarine
Tanasugarn of Thailand have entered the tournament. As neither girl is likely to be seeded there is a chance they may also be drawn to face each other in one of the earlier rounds. Tamarine will no doubt be anxious to avenge her defeat last year, which deprived her of her first triumph on home soil.
