Will we ever see a teenager win a Slam again?

Sharapova's triumph at the 2006 USO was the last time a teenaged player won a Grand Slam tournament. Ivanovic will be 20 y.o. by the end of this season, and with her goes, IMO, the last realistic chance of a teenager again winning a Grand Slam tournament in the coming years.

The AER has limited the experience (and the ranking points) teenagers can obtain on their first few years on the Tour, and has arguably made it tougher for them to breakthrough as early as they once did.

Also, none of the 1989-1991 age group players seem to fulfil the requirements of the true supernova: huge weapons for instant success. Some of them (like say Szavay) already have good all-around games and can develop into excellent, versatile players, but that will take time. They don't have that big weapon that makes you look at them and instantly recognize a potential world beater. The exception is perhaps Vaidisova, but her game has obvious limitations, and she has so far been unable to give that extra step to prove that she can be a contender.

So

Will we ever see a teenager win a Grand Slam tournament again? If so, who? When?

If no teenager wins a Slam ever again, I'll call this poll "the curse of Corswandt". Sort of like the curse of Béla Guttmann, according to which Benfica would never again win the European Champion's Cup. Benfica has already reached 5 finals of the Cup after Guttmann left the club, but lost all of them.

yes, but might not for awhile... there will be more tennis teen prodigys in the future, although, the current generation isn't impressive

Vaidisova could win one next year, she has the game, just not the mind yet. Players such as Azarenka, Szavay, Radwanska won't win slams in their teenage years although i think they will have great chances to do so as they mature. I guess Paszek should be seriously considered since she is still only 16 and is in the top 50, i doubt she will win one next year but maybe in 2009 if she stays healthy. She needs a better serve though.

Grassonkova.

A better question might be when will we see a 30 year old win a Grand Slam again. I think the wait for that will be a lot longer than the wait for a teen Grand Slam champ personally.

But to answer the question I see a few candidates at the moment but Paszek does look the most likely. She has another three years of Grand Slam competition to accomplish the feat.

Nicole still has 5 slams left as being a teenager. Good chance it may happen. Paszek has a good chance too, since she has like 12 slams left as a teenager (I think).

NICOLE VAIDISOVA

Dokic - Hantuchova - Zakopalova - Minella - Szavay - Bammer - Safarova
Stanciute - Panova - Gubacsi - Cibulkova - Cirstea - Hofmanova - Cetkovska

Re: Will we ever see a teenager win a Slam again?

Vaidisova and Paszek are the only ones that have a chance to win it....

Vaidisova already reached 2 SF, so with a lucky draw (like in AO) she can reach the final and win it.

depends on how "long" of a wait your talkin. I mean i can easily see Davenport coming back and winning a slam...OR i can easily see Venus and Henin winning slams when they are 30. And Serena if she gets back into shape......
