3 or 5 sets

In another thread, I suggested both men and women should play :
  • best of 3 sets matches in the early rounds
  • best of 5 sets matches in QF, SF and Finals.
Do you agree it would be a good format ?

Re: 3 or 5 sets

i think it would be good for best of 3 up to the quarters then best of 5 onwards... it would be pointless for the women to play best of 5 in the early rounds, would just be a waste of time!!! lol! but in the 2nd week it would be great...

5 set matches are just far too long I just can't sit still watching one of them all the way...

Re: 3 or 5 sets

I really don't like your format. but yes it is an interesting suggesion though.
If had to put this format i'll only put it for only ATP.

Re: 3 or 5 sets

I think the men need something between best of 3 and 5 sets for slams, because best of 5 is too long and best of 3 is probably too easy for the men in slams.

Re: 3 or 5 sets

Keep it the way it is. Dont think the women will be able to handle it because they'll get tired going into the rounds.

Re: 3 or 5 sets

The WTA is already injury-plagued and making them play 3 out of 5 will make it worse (if that's possible).

Re: 3 or 5 sets

I like the idea.
The only way it seems well see a ladies final at the US Open go to 3 sets in this century is if the players played best 3 out of 5.

Best 2 out of 3 sets on the men's side would give the men a slightly better chance to beat Federer which seems impossible in best 3 out of 5.

For someone like Serena, who starts off matches slow, best 3 out of 5 would give her a shot to get her act together.

Re: 3 or 5 sets

Best of 5 sets for every final on the ATP and WTA tour. Remain best of three for QF and SF

If best of 5 sets in QF and SF, there will be problems with player fatigue and risk of injuries/retirement.

Five set finals are better as more value for money and should produce epic matches, making them more exciting.

Re: 3 or 5 sets

Silly idea. Best of five sets in GSs are perfect the way they are. Only rarely do you get bad five setters, and it usually involves scrubs anyway.
