No sweat, easy victories, and she wins a main-draw wild-card for the Australian Open! Yes, the competition wasn’t as tough as last year – about on par with a $10k - but with 9 frustrating months of back problems, this is proof Iroda is on her way back.
Final report: “TASHKENT: Home favourite Iroda Tulyaganova proved too hot for Tara Iyer as the former World No.16 cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory in the women’s final of the Asian tennis championship here on Saturday. Thus, the 25-year-old Uzbek captured a wild card for the 2008 Australian Open. Tulyaganova faced only one break point, in the second game of the first set. She came out of troublewith one of her seven aces.Meanwhile, it was a double delight for Uzbekistan as the top-seeded Denis Istomin won the men’s title beating Tatsuma Ito of Japan 6-2, 6-4. Hence, Uzbekistan bagged both the Australian Open wild cards at stake.” http://www.hindu.com/2007/09/09/stor...0957001700.htm
Congrats Iri for taking full advantage of the location & weaker draw.
3rd year in a row that a player from Uzbekistan's won. If they want a stronger field in the future, they'll have to change the location from Tashkent (has been there since 2002!!!), and hold it at a better time. The 2001 event in Hong Kong had an excellent field.
The event was also hardly publicised prior to the event compared to previous years...
