Okay obviously Venus was the better player than Justine but still lost.*

Do you guys know of any other instances?

*this is a joke. (Supergrunt )

Serena. Simona. Ana. Petra. Venus.
Clijsters, Henin, Dementieva, Davenport.
Martina Hingis - "No one else played like Hingis - no one could."

Yes if Henin is the better player then why did she lose to Mauresmo at the AO and Maria at the US Open.

Even I didn't believe that in general Bartoli was a better player than Henin and I don't even like Henin. Some people are being bias when they need to realise this is sport. You will lose for various reason against a lesser player.

The better sometimes lose. Serena in Wimby and the wta finals tournament to Maria in 2004. Venus was ill this year so yeah...the better player lost. If venus gets healthy it will be a wake up call. Also want to throw in Fed against most of the players he lost to....it's obvious in this case that it was a once every now and then thing.

Chris Evert in the 1975 Wimbledon semis against Billie Jean. Chrissie had finally raised her game to be able to beat BJK, but fell apart in the second set, and let BJK in the door. Laster Chrissie shared that it was because her on again off again boyfriend (Jimmy Connors) had brought a cute little UK actress to the match, which totally unnerved her upsetting her concentration.

mental fortitude is THE most important thing. followed by fitness. We're not talking about the better player in general, but the better player on the day, DURING the match and once the winner is announced. Sorry, i love juju, but when Bartoli beat her, it was because Bartoli was better on the day. no excuses.

If you're better ON THE DAY, then you win that day. Simple as that. Unless of course you are ahead and then have to retire due to injury/illness.

Re: Has there ever been an instance where the BETTER player on the day LOST the match

Jennifer at times during the US semi '03 vs. Henin was the better player but if she'd been better overall she would've have blown the countless leads she had. David55 is exactly right by saying "on the day" because it doesn't matter who is the better quality player overall.

Re: Has there ever been an instance where the BETTER player on the day LOST the match

I feel like Seles was the better player during two crushing losses in her career. The 1995 US Open final and the 1998 French Open final. In both matches she bagelled her opponent in one set and lost a close tiebreaker and won more games than her opponent.

But that's how the ball bounces.

Perfectly said. The notion that soomeone can play better than their opponent in a match and still lose is laughable. You may be a better player overall but you don't lose if you out-play your opponent, you win. If you lose, your opponent outplayed you.

Well Stuttgart Q1:Husarova d. Kerber 6-3 0-6 6-4 watched it and Kerber was better just a few errors at the end took the match away but I'd say usually the better player wins.

Rest in Peace Bally!
