Women should be made to play 5 sets at GS level

Or else they should recieve less prize money than men. Its really unfair that men should go through 4-5 hour matches and women only last 1 hour or so and get equal amounts of money!
Look at the US Open final for instance, its over before we know it!

Discuss what you think?

Why not have the men play three sets?

I think that they should play best of 5 in the final.

That's a good point! But women have played best of 5 sets before (can't remember which tournament though)

WTA Championships when it was played at Madison Square Garden. Steffi Graf beat Martina Hingis in a best of 5 sets.

Re: Women should be made to play 5 sets at GS level

I suggest both men and women would play best of 3 sets matches in the early rounds. For the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals, both men and women should play best of 5 sets matchs.

Re: Women should be made to play 5 sets at GS level

I think that's a good idea by JSeles. It's blatantly unfair for the women to get equal prize money when they don't have to play five sets, but I don't think they were going to get the equal money any other way. The grand slam organisers probably want to keep three-setters for TV spectators who don't have the time to sit through a match that goes to five. If both men and women played three sets to start off with, they wouldn't lose the concept altogether, and it would kill two birds with one stone... very fast ladies' finals and boring men's early rounds that go on too long.

Re: Women should be made to play 5 sets at GS level

Perhaps they could make it conditional, if the match looks like it will end in under 70 minutes, then a 5 setter would be declarred. Think of all the gamesmanship that would be involved.

Rena- a tennis great! 22 at striking distance.

u mean to lengthen the finals match, since the scores are always 6-1, 6-2?

Just curious
How much does the winner of ATP Masters Series earn?
And as well as Tier 1?

Are they the same?
