How good is Julia Vakulenko?

She has crushed almost all of my favourites. And they say if you can beat them, join them

So anyone seen her play?

Just saw her once against Sveta...forget at the moment if it was RG or Wimby. She played well but kind of faded out. I think she'd be top 20 or top 25 without multitudinous injury problems.

Re: How good is Julia Vakulenko?

She is quite a hard to predict player. She can play terrible and I say that as a fan but when she is grooved and in the mood she is a fabulous player with very few weeknesses.

She has a big serve, good return, and her groundies, both her forehand and two-handed backhand are hit with effortless and graceful power and accurancy. She is not a player who simply likes to use her powerful groundstrokes to overpower her opponent by just hitting the ball very hard back to them. She likes to hit winners and is always looking to put the ball away. Her movement isn't the strongest and is probably the weekest part of her game but it is good enough. That is when she is playing well.

When she isn't playing well she can be quite lethargic and can look like she doesn't care. She can also produce errors by the handful.

But clearly right now she is playing very very well indeed and if she continues like this there really isn't anyone in the bottom of the draw she can't beat.

Re: How good is Julia Vakulenko?

I have seen Julia play on several occasions. She has been hampered so much by injury and by a bout with depression, and has had to start at square one several times. She has definitely raised her level this year, and it is doubtless no coincidence that she has also bulked up physically quite a bit. She doesn't resemble the wispy-looking woman of a couple of years ago. Vakulenko can hit some very solid groundstrokes, but can get caught up in making rallies too short. She can also go downhill mentally. I think a turning point for her was the first round of Wimbledon; she didn't win, but she took Sveta to the brink.
