The Moderator: Questions
Q: Maria you steamrolled through your first two opponents earlier this week and today you had a lot of trouble. What happened out there?
A: Well, you know the wind was really affecting my serving out there and I just couldn't get into a consistent groove in that last set. Actually, after I was broken back in the third set I began to have pain in my shoulder and that contributed to the doubles that I served in that last set. It also bothered me in the first two sets but I was able to play through it.
Q: What did you think about your opponent?
A: Well, I felt she played a solid game and took her chances. That's what it's about taking your chances and I didn't take mine. I feel that the way I played, allowed her to step in and take control of the match.
Q: Who do you think will win this tournament, now that you are out?
A: I don't care. I'm out of the tournament.
Q: Maria, when you think about all your losses this year being so lopsided at the Australian, French, Wimbledon, and now here; do you feel that you have loss confidence and are no longer a factor?
A: Absolutley, not. I'm 20 years old and have won two grand slams and been to the finals of many others. I can only be proud of my accomplishments and I'm sure that there will be more in the future.
Q: What events do you plan to play in the fall?
A: Well, I'm not really sure right now. I have to get some x-rays on my shoulder to see how it was re-injured during the match. I don't think I'll be able to play until possibly the YEC.
Q: What are you able to take out of this tournament?
A: Well, I'm 20 years old and I've gotten to the thrid round of a major. I'm sure in the future I'll be able to win this again, and other matches.
Q: Maria, how did you feel about wearing your day dress?
A: I mean, unfortunately I only got to where it once. It was inspired by the city and I know I looked great in it.
Q: What can you say about Venus's new line, eleven? Does it inspire you to come up with more creative outfits?
A: No, I mean her outfits look great but I'm not in competition to be the best dressed. I'm in competition to win the majors and that didn't happen this year.
Q: Maria, can you sum up this year for us?
A: Well, the year isn't over. There's still the YEC that I hope to win. But, like I said before. I'm 20 years old and I've gotten to the finals of the Australian Open and the semis of the French. I guess I just have to get over this shoulder injury of mine and then I will be a factor once again at majors. I see plenty more slams in my future. Thank you.
