Rome, Cincinnati and Canada to become combined events

According to ATP site, Rome and Cincy will be combined by 2011, as will Canada (apparently they will still alternate between toronto and montreal, but will play in same city). Madrid will be combined from its inception in 2009, and Indian Wells and Miami will remain combined... there are rumors about making a combined event in China, too.

Nice to have it confirmed.

It will always be Arantxa, hall of famer! and martina hingis and kim clijsters - amazing legends
ana ivanovic and the italian girls, especially pennetta (forza azzurre! RG CHAMP FRANCESCA AND FINALIST SARA!)
aga, vika, sam, na in the next tier

Don't know about WTA but this is absolutely ridiculous for Canada! Now both Toronto & Montreal have a top quality event every year (alterning ATP & WTA). With that 'great' new idea both cities will get an event every 2 years

Are they going to upgrade the women's tournament at Cincy? Because right now it is a fairly mediocre tournament in comparison to the Masters the ATP has there.

Yes, it will basically take the place of the TIER 1 San Diego. The only down side is that the US now only has one Tier 3

Just in time as I leave San Diego for college.

The lack of low tiers in the US is understandable on the women's side, since only big name players attract crowds and none of them ever play low tier events anyway. Unlike the ATP, where Roddick/Blake keep the American Mickey Mouse tournaments happy.

Now that really really sucks!

No. I read that in Canada, ATP and WTA tournaments will be same week but one in Toronto, the other one in Montreal.

I think TSN will show Toronto and RDS will show Montreal.

Re: Rome, Cincinnati and Canada to become combined events

Will the ATP/WTA compensate Tennis Canada for the millions it will lose?
Basically instead of having 2 tournaments attracting 140 000-180 000 spectators, we'll get one attracting 200 000.

Do you have a link to the article?

It kind of sucks for the people in Canada who don't have RDS though and won't be able to see the tennis in Montreal.

Ok. It's not that bad then.

But what's the point of combining the events? Maybe half the draw could play in Montréal and half the draw in Toronto

Re: Rome, Cincinnati and Canada to become combined events

http://www.rds.ca/intercanada/chroniques/235854.html
