Alona Bondarenko has some skills

Obviously she mostly didn't look good since Venus was pounding her, but some of her shots! She hit winners off some things I thought she couldn't even reach. She's undersized, and against Venus, she was reduced to playing from the baseline. (I don't know if that's her normal style.)

But she's as talented (that means her combination of physical and mental gifts, not how she plays) as any of the non-slam winners ranked ahead of her, except Jankovic and Ivanovic. In other words, I see top ten player, but not slam winner. But of course, one match when she's being overpowered is a very small sample size.

Re: Alona Bondarenko has some skills

Baselining is Alona's normal style, but she's definitely used to leaning into her shots a whole lot more. She could normally slam that backhand comperable to Jankovic. But...Venus takes everything out.

Lol! Top 10 when she adds 10 MPH to her first and second serves.

Re: Alona Bondarenko has some skills

I was not really impressed, sorry. Not enough variety to make it much higher IMO, and no big serve (not that you need a huge serve to make it to the Top 10, but then you gotta be a very good all court player with really big grounstrokes... or something.)

No way. I thought she was very average...

I wasn't really impressed either. She could potentially make it to top 10, but that's not really that hard anymore.

I'd like to see her against someone less super-human than Venus; I'd probably have a better impression of her. But her serve barely ever got her into any kind of offensive positions and I'm not sure she's aggressive enough to test top players. Her BH is nice though. And she's pretty. But it didn't look like she had a clothing sponsor which made me sad. Ukraine rocks.

She looks useful ..... when she is given the time.

Late developer at 23: no way top 10.

It was never that hard. That's kind of my point. At least part of it. Being a 'top ten' player doesn't mean you're a threat to win a slam. It never has. It means that, on average, you make the 4th round or the QFs when you play slams. It doesn't even mean you consistently make the QFs.

'Top ten' is a nice phrase, but it doesn't mean you're a contender. Barring injury, I'm CERTAIN Alona Bondarenko's career high ranking will be #10 of better. That's put her in the same category of player as Ai Sugiyma, Paola Suarez, Sandrine Testud and Juli Halard-Decugis. I think she's definitely on that level.

Re: Alona Bondarenko has some skills

I am not very impressed either. She has a decent technique and hits deep. That's why she's ranked as high as she is.

I didn't enjoy watching her game. She looked wooden and one-dimentional. I am glad that she's doing well, though. I'm Ukrainian too. But tonight's performance revealed her weakenesses and in a way made me embarassed that this is the best player we've got.

Re: Alona Bondarenko has some skills

She's okay off the ground, IMO. She played some good points but couldn't string anything worthwhile together. And she does seem small, or was that just because she was playing Venus?

I think a lot of players would be better if they were more consistent. Oh, and had a better serve.

It's 2008 and I'm shopping for a new fave. Hell no! And Venus is still playing?

Re: Alona Bondarenko has some skills

She's really cute, and a few times surprised Venus with the pace she was able to put on the ball. Serve is so pathetic though.
