Barbara Schett's current form

Well another quarter-final loss, she hasn't been past that stage since February last year.

Fed Cup is next against Croatia so maybe she can get a little confidence from there.

She is at her lowest ranking since 1998 and there is a chance that she won't be seeded at the US Open, as all of those tournaments are tough and she can be out very early unless she gets very lucky. New Haven she will have to play qualifying which I do think will be good for her as that will give her a chance to get some matches instead of having it tough in the first round.

She will be playing doubles with Anna Kournikova up until the US Open but as has been proven before when Babsi does well in doubles it doesn't transcend into singles success, Hamburg this year was a perfect example winning every match easily and the title with Hingis and then having a horrible clay court season.

The schedule this year was wrong up til the French Open she played only tier 1's and 2's and never gave herself a chance of progressing, her ranking then was in the early 20's and in most of the tournaments she missed out on a seeding and was really unlucky in getting bad draws and then the big points came off from the French Open last year (and of course she would get the most dangerous unseeded player in the second round) and her ranking is outside of the top 30.

Onto Vienna and reached the quarter-finals but was injured the whole tournament which caused her to pull out of Rosmalen.

Grass has never been Babsi's best surface but it was a real surprise seeing her losing to Casanova, Babsi said, please note these are not excuses but what she said that she finds it difficult playing a player she has never seen before and that all the balls she was hitting were very deep.

The confidence was dwindling down after every loss early in the year, she had high expectations of this year and wanted to get back into the top 10.

So what is the problem?
Is she still suffering from the Bernoldi spilt-up?
Is it low confidence?
Is it injury?
or something else?

Because she is defintely having a bad year and she she shouldn't be where she is ranking-wise.

her problem is her mental situation, she seems to be much more confident with a partner on court.

I don't know what happened to Babsi For a fleeting few months in 1999 she looked a genuine top ten contender, and now.....

I agree with you that she has chosen a poor schedule this year, however I think there has been something wrong with Babsi for a long time. Something happened at the beginning of 2000 that totally swept her self belief and I don't know why. She began to choke away matches (particularly against ASV, at Oz Open and RG that year) and has never been the same. She is a talented shot maker - but unfortunately she fits firmly into the catergory of a B-Grade power player. She has her occassions of brilliance, (beating Venus at RG '01), but I think as well as her mental and physical failings she also doesn't have a particuarly good work ethic (wasn't there an article a month or two back about her cutting back her training sessions?). She has excepted her place in the order of things, she's a top 30 player, nothing more nothing less. She will probably be top 30 by years end.

She was slumping a bit before 2001 , but ever since she beat Venus at Roland Garros it's gotten worse... Can you say the Venus curse????

Tennisaddict I totally disagree with you, when I look at the top 30 I see Babsi being better than more than half of the players listed there, she is much better than her ranking is now. She is not a pure power player either, she does hit hard but she slices the backhand a lot. If players like Panova and Smashnova can get to where they are now with no weapons then I think Babsi can do the same.

We all know she is a very emotional player and any little thing she can lose concentration, for instance there were 3 matches this year that slowly dented her confidence.

Scottsdale - vs Capriati she was up 5-0 in the first set and then went on to lose the set 7-5

Indian Wells - vs Hantuchova was up a set and a break (this for me was the turning point in the year)

Miami - vs Dementieva was up a break in both sets.

She has under-achieved by a great deal, I don't know if she will ever get back in the top 10 but for sure she shouldn't be where she is now.

And I saw her against Serena last year in Toronto live and she had no trouble with Serena's pace at all, and you can't say that about many players.

i have this bad feeling Babsi Schett will follow Anke and will retire end of the year.

Something was bound to go right sometime today, All these broken pieces fit together to make a perfect picture of us
It got cold and then dark so suddenly and rained, It rained so hard the two of us were the only thing
That we could see for miles and miles
And in the middle of the flood I felt my worth, When you held onto me like I was your little life raft
Please know that you were mine as well
Drops of water hit the ground like God's own tears
And spread out into shapes like Salad bowls and basins and buckets for bailing out the flood

Matthias, I think you could be right there, it has been on the cards all year to be honest. I just have this feeling that she has tried everything she could. I am desperate to get a copy of some quotes after todays match, if anyone has them please post them.

Last year Anke retired on the Sunday of Fed Cup in July, I hope that Babsi isn't a similar story.

To make myself feel better I think back to her really bad patches of 2000 in the clay season and hardcourt season and then in the clay season last year where she did really bad but then she beat Venus and got to the fourth round.

yes she tried everything she could.
but wasnīt it a bad sign as she cancelled her fitness-programm?
how will she come back to the top20 without good fitness?
and i think it isnīt motivation for a former top10 player to be ranked around #30
and to play Qualifying
mabye she already retired (mentaly) and will just finish the season.

i donīt want depress you,

cause Anke was playing Qualifying in San Diego 1998 (?)
and it was the turning point for her, cause she was playing great after qualifying and she came back to the top15!

On court against Casanova she wasn't at all happy with herself, I was sitting next to her camp and she looked at them after just about every point and couldn't stop swearing, I thought it was possible she'd get a warning. Also annoying for her was that Casanova's camp were vocal in their encouragement, and both player's camps were right next to each other.

I remember Babsi went flying up the rankings, into the top ten & was doing very well. But then I heard she had some heart problems & was told to stop playing, until they could figure out what was wrong. She was pretty much out for a while ( A few months) & then after she was given the go ahead to return, she never did get back to playing as good as she did at 1st.

Maybe I'm dreaming this up, but I really do remember hearing she was having heart trouble right when she went away for a while, after breaking the top 10 & doing so well.

DANIELA HANTUCHOVA = #1

Good luck Nathalie Dechy & Dinara Safina too!

Freefall, you are not dreaming. She did have a heart problem and I can't remember which year, 99 or 00, maybe. She stayed off the tour until she got the go ahead to come back. She also had some other health problems around that time also.

Babsi, I agree with you and it is so sad to see her in this huge slump. I expected her to win this match today, especially since she was h-to-h 5-0 against Ruano Pascual. The breakup in her relationship could be a big factor as she was not in the best of spirits with the breakup with Thomas.

I think if she does start in qualifying matches, she will get the play in and it may make her more motivated. I sure hope whatever the whole story is that it can be resolved for her.
