did MJF really pick Venus at Wimbledon? I seem to remember diferent.
And what a massive jinx on Venus. She will now proceed to crash out to a qualifier.

Really suprised here

I always wanted to be somebody. If I made it, it's half because I was game enough to take a lot of punishment along the way and half because there were a lot of people who cared enough to help me.

Yes, she did. Even after Venus' early round scares, she still stuck behind her.

Re: ESPN Commentators pick U.S. Open Winner

"Mary Joe Fernandez
ESPN analyst
Winner

Men: You have to go with Roger Federer, but watch out for Rafael Nadal because he has a very favorable draw.

Women: I picked Venus Williams to win Wimbledon and I'm sticking with her … until she loses and then I'll pick somebody else because there are a lot of players who can win it."

Don't go too far out on a limb, Mary Jo! Anyone else get the feeling before Mary made her prediction, she wanted to know what the others said first?

A pick from Mary Jo is a kiss of death. She picked Serena to beat Henin in both their quarterfinal matchups at the French Open and Wimbledon. She verbally sparred (as well as Mary Jo can) with Cliff Drysdale about her Wimbledon pick during Serena's fourth round match at Wimbledon.

If I had to go out on a limb, I would have picked Serena over Venus. If Serena defeats Henin, she'll run away with the tournament. Serena's recent major wins have all been on hardcourts, with Venus' drought of winning a hardcourt major at six years. Venus has won one hardcourt tournament since August 2002 (Tier III, Memphis 2007).

I think Venus has an excellent opportunity to make it into the quarterfinals but its too difficult to predict after that for anyone.
