How Much Potential Does Safina Have?

just wondering. i've been a fan for a while now, but she is definitely not playing her best at the moment. just curious as to how high you think she could go.

dementieva + sharapova + bartoli + chakvetadze

Quite a bit more that I thought. She really impressed me in the 2nd set against Bartoli.

She has a lot of potential. She makes her matches so much harder than they should be.

Re: How Much Potential Does Safina Have?

She has an excellent serve, excellent direction and pace of her groundstrokes, plus she has one of the best drives on the tour. Those three things have helped her crack the top 10, but until she learns how build a transition game and hit the ball with some more variety she isn't going anywhere too fast.

There are reasons she struggles against Mauresmo and Henin and has beaten Kuznetsova and Dementieva. I've never seen her be a slam champion but semifinals/finals are definitely not out of the picture.

Re: How Much Potential Does Safina Have?

omg i was at her match versus daniilidou. when i got there she was ON...serving bombs, pinning her groundies in the corners and really pumping herself up. from 5-4, 40-15, however, she was a COMPLETELY different player. double faulting all the time, tons of errors, and really getting upset with herself. she has a great game, but i think her two major weaknesses are fitness and her mental game. she was almost crying for the rest of the match, and kept letting little things get to her. she was audibly trying to catch her breath for the whole third set. however, i love her fieriness and it is my hope that she will be able to translate that into more positive results in the future. her serve is really impressive.

Whatever potential she has is undermined by her awful lack of mobility and her incompetent tactical choices....

She always seems flustered when I see her. I like her alot too, I think she needs to work on the physical side.

Re: How Much Potential Does Safina Have?

She reminds me a lot of Petrova. Her game I mean. They even used to wear the same clothes, same clothing sponsor. And the brand of their racket...
Back to topic, like petrova, she has a great serve, and she plays deep, top spin...+Safina can play great angles, better than Petrova I think. Safina is a right-handed Schnyder in terms of angles, as well as Hantuchova...
I think she'll always be TOP20 player. She has the weapons, but can't put it all together plus she's rather slow..

Simona Halep
Juan Martin Del Potro

I've heard this soo many times: disagree, their games are nothing alike.

Safina seems low on confidence and self-belief right now - and not playing anywhere near her full potential this year. She was actually favourite to beat Ivanovic in the Toronto semi last year: which shows how much she has regressed. The recent third set against Pin and second v Bartoli was Dina at her best - an awesome barrage of fore-hands and temporarily dominating play. Not enough variety or technically sound match play to be a Slam contender.

Dinara plays nothing like Nadia... although I think Dinara actually has and used some variety.

Re: How Much Potential Does Safina Have?

She does play like Marat a bit...either very good (perhaps not brilliant like Marat yet) or very sub-par. And as has been illustrated, the two can occur in the very same match. She's not yet a threat to the very top players either (except Sharapova on clay).
