Question about Steffi Graf.

I was just wondering how many tournaments Steffi played each year during her career?

She normally played 12 events, but because she won so many including 66 matches in a row at one time, she could still be #1. the computer rankings were different back then. They added all your points together and then divided them by the # of tourneies you played. This is why Steffi made that top spot hers. She could play 12 events and beat everybody almost.

so the WTA changed to rules to try to force the players to play more and Martina Hingis exploted this to remain at the top by reaching the finals and or SF and losing and so the WTA changed the rankings systen again!

Now your best 17 tourneys are added together to get your points. Serena has played only 12 so she has 5 zeros so hopefully the Steffi days are not back and Venus and some other players will make Serena work to stay there. Amazing Serena can have 5 zeros and still be #1. But she is also I think 38-2 this year so that speaks for itself.

see how little steffi played? the wta felt she was not supporting the tour so it tried to force her to play more but it did not work.

Anton; I dont think Steffi can really be accused of playing little. She may have played fewer tournaments than those ranked below her, but dont forget it was only once in a blue moon that sh'ed lose before a semi, meaning she probably played twice as many matches in a year as someone with twenty five tourneys to their name.

I never really appreciated Steffi at the time (she was too busy beating my dear Arantxa to win any favours) but her record is even more amazing than I thought...

Funny as well that she didnt win a title until her fifth year as a professional!

Ranking back then were divided by at least 14 , so 14 was the minumun amount of tournaments back then. If they had played 18 so 18 was the denominator.

I am not accusing Steffi of anything except being the best ever. the WTA did however try to get her to play more. I think this was mainly out of greed and they know a champion when they see one so they wanted to make more money off Steffi.

And dont forget back then only the finals were on TV pretty much so the WTA didnt care how many matches Steffi was playing, just how many finals she was on TV and selling tickets for.

and then to think she lead 5:3 in both matches she lost so she could have been undefeated

I think 89 killed her mentally a little though because in australian the next year she was not the same anymore, she looked so bored!

Steffi never liked playing at Australia... she played so few Aus Opens... makes you wonder if she could break Court's record if she had played a few more AOs...

That's so true - it's a shame she got injured so much - more than ever I wish she'd played Oz in 1995 and even 1996 (although I'm not complaining about who won that ) - she could have had two more year grand slams as she won the other three in each of those years .
