I'll say unlikely...but there's a lot of time left for me to change that assessment. So far, not so good.

I haven't seen the betting odds, but I expect Sharapova to be one of the favorites.

Who thought Serena would win the OZ?
Who thought Venus would win WB?

Sharapova will be a favorite in New York regardless of what her summer is. I wouldnt count her out until she is actually out of the tournament. She is one of the sports best fighters. She will fight to defend her title, just as she fought very hard in 05 in attempt to defend her Wimbledon title. It took one heck of a match to beat her then, and I sense it will be the same in New York.

I think we should wait to see how she plays this summer before guessing her chance at the Open

No one can say. Favourites for the Open should be decided after a few big tournaments.

My Favourites: Dancevic, Hantuchova, Gasquet, Golovin, Roddick, Sharapova, Stepanek

If 6-1 loss in the second set is called hard fought by you
then I don't know what you will call three setters.
In the first place, defending a grandslam title is very
different from ordinary tournament. And Sharapova has not
been able to defend the big titles.
As usual she will be considered a favorite but it is yet
to be seen.

Re: What the chance for Maria to defend this USOpen?

If she can get a few big wins this summer, then I wouldn't be surprised to see her defend in New York. I wouldn't be surprised to see her defend anyway, though. Maria will fight until the last ball is struck - that goes without saying. I think her problem is when she runs into these players that play like her - they hit big and like to dictate. She's got to come up with a plan B against those players - the Williams sisters, Ivanovic, Vaidisova, and Jankovic - because they all move better than she does. She hasn't quite figured out what to do when her A game is off, and that might be the difference. At the absolute worst, she'll make the quarters - I don't see her losing before then.

Serena Williams
21-Time Grand Slam Champion

6 AO ('03, '05, '07, '09, '10, '15) 3 FO ('02, '13, '15)
6 WBN ('02, '03, '09, '10, '12, '15) 6 USO ('99, '02, '08, '12, '13, '14)

Re: What the chance for Maria to defend this USOpen?

I'd be a bit kinder than 10% and say 1 in 5. It'll either be a Williams, Henin, her or someone else (pretty much equal weighting of those 5 options). Put it another way, there are very few people who have a better chance of winning than her.

Are you a raving mental case with awesome groundstrokes? I'll probably like you...
Hantuchova : Goerges : Johansson : Rybarikova : Li

Learning to love/Liking the look of...
Zakopalova : Lucic : Krajicek : Cetkovska : Cibulkova
Gajdosova : Govortsova : Olaru : Robson : Pliskova

Re: What the chance for Maria to defend this USOpen?

I'm not writing her off, especially considering that Serena and Amelie are on the mend, Justine doesn't relish the surface, Venus is Venus (:unpredictable: ), and the rest of the pack may not be ready for the breakthrough.

Did you see the match with Venus at Wimbledon 2005?

It was definately hard fought.

She fought out of a big hole in the first set and made the match very competitive while Venus was playing amazingly.

Re: What the chance for Maria to defend this USOpen?

Its depend if she can turn her season around before the US Open.
It would be so weird to see her coming into the Open withtout any Title.
