Over the past 48 hours I have consulted with my medical team and I have been advised that I need to rest my shoulder for the next 10 days with no activity. This will mean that I will have to once again withdraw from Fed Cup. All the scans and test show improvement in my shoulder but I still have a tremendous amount of swelling in the area. Since having another cortisone shot in 2007 is not an option for me, I need to monitor my shoulder at all times.
I know this withdrawl is very frustrating for all my Russian fans, but I promise you it is way more frustrating for me. Nothing would of made me happier then beating the Americans on American soil. The good news is that Russia still has an amazing team and I believe they will still have a very good chance to win the match.
no no no .... then the news headline next day would be something like ' Pride Maria killed the US team by her mouth ' and of course, it won't be spoken out by her careful mouth. She's so careful of her speech.
For a second there, I thought Maria was talking about beating Serena and Venus :haha:, but now I understand that she is talking about beating Meilen Tu, Vania King, Jill Craybas and Laura Granville.
Shame, but she's doing the right thing. I can't believe she's had to have cortisone injections at just 20! I'd always associated that with the latter stages of a career a la agassi. hopefully if she rests it and doesn't go for broke on the serve as often she'll be okay.
now she has nowhere to turn...she was an outcast with the russians and now shes gone and said that about her own country...the americans are gonna turn their backs on her...o well at least shes still got the United states of Daddy USD for short
Those statements- IF true- are the most foolish statements I've ever heard her make. And frankly, pretty irritating. I like Maria ( to the extent that I can like a player not named Williams ) But this really pisses me off. America has given her EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING! She's simply pandering for the Russian audience. I've got to believe those comments weren't meant for US consumption. She/her people blew it.
Did she really say that? What a bitch! She's about as Russian now as one of Joan Rivers' "Faberge" eggs on QVC. Someone needs to remind her its US companies paying her 2O million plus a year. I felt badly for her at WB, but now I'm just disappointed Venus didn't thrash her worse.
yeah, right! Maria doesn't really want to play Fed Cup for Russia--it's always something. It simply is not a priority for her.
Besides, the only thing worse than a chronic sore shoulder is the prospect of getting your behind handed back to you well spanked within the span of a couple of days.
She moved to America when she was a kid, she lives in America, trains in America, speaks perfect American English, is endorsed by an American clothing company, an American raquet company, and still is under the delusion that somehow she's not American. SMH.
Maria is obviously bitter about her losses to Americans this year. She is not going to runaway because there is nowhere to hide they will be promoting the series together.

I've already seen the U.S. Open Series "Road Trip" commercial many times this month. And guess what, Maria's face is the one they show first and more often in the commercial, not the Americans. I know her fans are going to say, well she's the defending champion and that's the reason. Wrong! Last year and the year before were the same story. Anything that has to do with promoting tennis in the States, her face is the front and center of it, not Americans.
Legal nationality is NOT the point. This is not a smart move/quote by someone who has been given SO much by America, from media to endorsments.
Even her PR team is American probably. She's biting the hand that feeds her. If she has anymore American supporters after this... *shakes head* She basically spat in ALL their faces.
Re: Nothing would of made me happier then beating the Americans
Didn't like her before, now I don't even respect her. Instead of the whole "beating Americans" line, she could've said something a little more gracious like "winning for Russia". Esp when the top Americans haven't allowed her more than four games against them at the majors this year. :haha:
I remember when her ass was sent packing at the Kremlin Cup and the first words out of her mouth was that she was going home.....and she sure wasn't talking about Russia. :haha:
It's a thoughtless quote but whatever anybody falls for that, ie actually thinks it means she has some kind of Russian pride is a fool, imo.

These comments from you are surprising. Why should she care who sees what she wrote? A bit of competitive spirit never hurt anyone. It would be OK for anyone else to write similar things. All this "her people" crap is ridiculous, she writes for her own website.

Whats foolish and rather pathetic is the number of Americans on here who wont give up bagging Maria for saying anything about her nationality. She has never made any suggestion that she is anything but proudly Russian. Some people could do with getting over this...

you know what support her all you want but don't make me pull out the interview. what I posted was exactly what she said. Just face the facts it was a stupid thing to write considering she lives in America, trains in America, does all things American. She can call herself anything she wants but it's actions that speak louder and her actions scream, "I'm AMERICAN". So don't get mad at everyone else because Maria came up with a quacker of a quote.
What a pathetic stupid phony! She never had the intention to play against the Williams sisters this week as she knows she would get her butt kicked again. If she loves Russia so much how come she hardly ever goes there, never mind live there. Anyone who believes a word she says is a fool. This shoulder injury excuse is getting rather tired.
I hope she clarifies this statement. There's no issue with her choosing to represent her birth country, even though no one thought she would this year either, but rather the way it was phrased. If she had said "I can't wait to represent Russia and beat the American team.", no problem. The way she said it indicates some contempt for America, which I doubt she actually has. It has nothing to do with nationalism, but with grace. If Mary Pierce started knocking France, I would think the same thing.
I wonder if her PR people read her blog and pre-aprrove the postings. Maybe they should, spontaneity be damned.
LMAO. Maria is hilarious
The fact that she can say that after being thrashed 3 times out of 4 by the US players shows the mentality of a champion.
"Australian Open? What Australian Open? *blank look*"
