Venus and Serena still the best two players in the world

True Williams fans have always known it and two slams this year they've come out of "nowhere" to win slams beating the best in the world to do so. But the real reason they are true champions is because they've now both won 2 slams when they weren't at their best. It's "easy" to win slams when you're the best in the world and blowing through the competition anyway, but when you have to fight and doubt yourself that little bit, and recover from injury, and not have the same results you're used to, it takes an insane amount of character to come back. I'm not going to use names, but it surely puts a lot of other players careers into perespective that were only able to win slams at the absoulute height of their abilities.

Justine has won a slam for 5 straight years.
Justine wasn't at her best in 2005 at the French Open.
She was just coming back on tour at Miami and less than 3 months later she was the winner of the French Open.
Almost half of her matches during that time went to 3 sets and yet she won every match that clay season.

I don't see why that's any different than what Venus or Serena did.
The clay season is three times as long as the grass or rebound ace season and yet she won every match even with an hamstring injury during the end of her Roland Garros run.

Sometimes I feel a few people on here would rather knock down people's accomplishments just to bring up another's.

I felt that Venus was the 2nd best player of this generation and I fought for that with her accomplisments in doubles, etc. in a thread a few weeks ago.
There's no denying that she is now.

At the same time Justine is a true champion.
And she's had to fight for her slams just as Venus and Serena.

I don't know

Congrats to Venus- By the way I was surprised at how ok I was with Venus winning than say with Serena winning. Now, I know it's because she's the less arrogant sister.

To be honest, I think Justine would have won the final had she got there. Such a missed opportunity Justine.

However, back to the title topic, what has Justine not done this last few years not to be considered the best also. She's won a lot more than both sisters!

Let's all have a look at the rankings, that come out on monday, to see who is still the best player in the world. I have a vague feeling, though, that it will be a little girl from Belgium and not Venus or Serena.

Hmmm because the rankigns really matter don't they... ...anyway, yes as everyone knows, other than on clay, when they are on form they are the best.

it doesn't matter if jankovic won x tournaments this year or that ivanovic won x...

they have not won any slams so far. period. slams qualify you as great.

at the end of the day (and a career) that's all that matters.

so serena played two good tournaments - gee, she won a slam and what is considered the fifth slam.

and venus won her fourth wimbledon.

and that's supposed to equal to other folks' victories.

puhleez.

I'll go to the grave saying that Venus and Serena will always be the #1 and #2 players in the world...i dont care WHO is ranked #1 and 2. They only loose when they are injured or not playing well...(as they say all the time) now thats my opinion and if anybody dont like it thats just too damn bad!

We'll have to see what happens as the tour shifts to the summer hard courts, but it would be fair to look to Justine, Serena and (now) Venus as the 3 top contenders for the tournaments they enter.

Venus is the best player this year on grass (and period). How does winning Wimbledon make her the best right now though, I don't know. Other players have performed more consistently at slams in recent years and one winning slam performance doesn't make you the best in the world.

They are not desperate to do anything. They are still motivated to play good tennis because they know they have the game, talent, and ability to do even more. But with this Wimbledon, and with the one in '05, Venus had already proven she was a champion. As I said, they're playing for icing on the cake now.

I don't completely agree.They do belong in a group of top 5.

But you can't just write off Justine Henin.Maybe in this particulary moment, they seem as the best just because Serena was injured against Henin and because Venus easily defeated Bartoli. But that's just because of the momentum right now.Justine led 61 10 with a break yesterday, but let off. This doesn't happen often to her.She probably would win easily if she would go 61 20 or 61 30.These things happen, but I still believe she is the best player right now, allthough the Williams sisters are very close. :D
