It's pretty shocking actually. I can understand debutants Ivanovic and Bartoli losing badly, but Sharapova should have done better.

Re: Most competitive GS final of the year!

This WAS the most competitive major final of the year, and that's sad.

Re: Most competitive GS final of the year!

It was actually a lot closer than the scoreline suggests and so in that sense it was a competitive match.

- Sharapova - Kerber - Serena - Halep - Mladenovic -

'I had plenty of boyfriends and lots of affairs, but they got furious when I made my name. People would ring up and ask me out. I'd say: "But I'm writing." 'And they'd say: "I see. You're too grand for us now." 'And I'd say: "Actually, I've always been too grand for you."

Re: Most competitive GS final of the year!

This match WAS competetive. The score doesn't always reflect the actual match. This match had very few UFEs and many good ralleys.

Marion Bartoli is a force to be dealt with in the near future. Great run by Marion!

Re: Most competitive GS final of the year!

bring back the days of the 90s finals!

but i think the main reason is that we have so many different players in GS finals now

ARANTXA SANCHEZ-VICARIO...Tennis legend in body and heart!

1989, 1994, 1998 French Open Champion, 1994 U.S. Open Champion
1994, 1995 Australian Open Finalist, 1995, 1996 Wimbledon Finalist
4- Time Olympic Medalist, 5-Time Fed Cup Winning Team, Inducted into Hall of Fame in 2007!!!

Re: Most competitive GS final of the year!

Well the players playing the best tennis made the final.

I don't think you can ask for anything else.

Re: Most competitive GS final of the year!

thats because when it comes to fast courts, there is no one up to the challenge against the sista's.
The only GS where the field has an advantage is RG. So if the sista's are fit it's gonna be pretty hard to win a slam when they are in the final.

Re: Most competitive GS final of the year!

I think it was a competitive final for sure.

Bartoli played well and had Venus on the run a lot, but Venus is the BEST ATHLETE on the womens tour and her ability to get to balls and return them, when they would be clean winners against other players is the reason it was 64 61 it could have been soooo much closer and thats something you cant say about the Australian Open or Roland Garros finals.

Re: Most competitive GS final of the year!

it was def. more competitive.
Bartoli is very mentally tough. I mean looked how Ivanovic handled her first slam final. It takes guts to play your game in that much of a pressure situation. But Venus was in full flow today and that is very tough to contend against.

And I love how people are changing their tune now. I distinctly remember 2006 AO when both WS lost early. All everyone could talk about was how deep the women's field is now and the WS couldn't just waltz in and win majors anymore. That the WS were no longer top players cuz there were too many good players. Well here we are a year later and once again the WS have claimed 2/3 majors played. And yet somehow the women's field is not as deep. You can't have it both ways people.
