NBC Is A Chauvinist Pig Of A Network!

show the entire quarterfinal between roddick and gasquet, but only show eighth points of the biggest upset in women's tennis in years and of the wimbledon semifinal. chauvanist pigs.

Re: NBC Is A Chauvinist Pig Of A Network!

I'm pissed too, but it's a business. Women's tennis fans are a 'niche' compared to the men. Network execs are actually amoral. They will show Shakespeare or a snuff film, if they could get away with it. The only thing they care about is another Mercedes in the driveway. If showing nothing but women's tennis does that, they'll do it. If showing frogs mating does it, they'll do that.

The fault, if you want to call it that, lies with a public largely apathetic to women's sport. That and the rain delays that forced them to choose in the first place.

Roddick vs. Gasquet was a fantastic match, and the best of the tournament so far

espn mentioned that they recieved lots of letters, calls, and emails and now they make sure to try and balance things out. may not seem that way but at least they acknowledge hearing the fans.

so i suggest doing the same with nbc. complain. even if it doesnt work, better to complain to them then to us, at least there's a chance they can be more fair next time around.

give me the email and i'll send an email in complaining, it's a start.

The mens matches were infinitely better quality.

Umm, tennis in general is a niche sport! There is not a gigantic gulf in popularity between the women's and the men's, TV ratings bear that out. It's not like comparing men's and women's basketball. Tennis is low rated period, male or female. Roddick was playing so they went with that instead of the Belgian and French women.

Roddick/Gaquet was full of BEAUTIFUL tennis. BEAUTIFUL! I think they made the right decision today.

Re: NBC Is A Chauvinist Pig Of A Network!

They are fucking idiots at NBC. For them not to switch to Henin-Bartoli as it went to 1-0, 2-0, 3-0 with Bartoli leading in set 3 shows they are fucking tools.
That might be the biggest upset in an important match in this era. And they ignore it to show the middle of a 10 hour match.

my guess is that b/c Roddick is American. If it were, say Serena vs Bartoli, and Federer vs Gasquet, NBC would have shown Serena.

I agree with urkerlay..I do think that because Roddick was playing, the American networks chose to televise his match. I was hungry to see more of what was happening between Henin and Bartoli, and agree that they should have switched over more and let us see what is arguably one of the biggest upsets in Wimbledon history..but..Corporate America saw otherwise. That's that. I'm not pissed about it really.

I'd rather have a bottle in front of me, than a frontal lobotomy.

I can't complain. The fact is every GS I worry whether the networks will cover that matches I want to watch (ie. the Women's matches). And I must admit, between ESPN2 and NBC they have been surprisingly WTA heavy. They have to show what the audience wants to see, and that is the Williams sisters and Andy Roddick.

If they didn't have to give us a heavy dose of Roddick, they would have shown more of the Henin/Bartoli match, which to be fair started out as the wipe out they thought it would be. By the time that match got interesting, Roddick was in trouble, and they couldn't risk alienating his audience, by bailing on him.

Re: NBC Is A Chauvinist Pig Of A Network!

I've learned enough from NBC to not even bother watching them. I knew that they would do something like that, although I thought they would do it to the Venus/Ivanovic match so I didn't bother watching it. I purchased the Wimbledon Live, which I wish was available for all tournaments. I just finally downloaded the Henin/Bartoli and just now found the result without venturing to NBC or here until I had the chance to download and watch both Venus and Justine's matches. I think NBC is crap...why bother having rights to a tournament in which you don't even begin covering it until the end of the first week, and then only air 3 hours until the quarterfinals, in which most of that time is devoted to (one full mens match). They should just give it up to ESPN, who would show all matches if they had the rights to them.

Re: NBC Is A Chauvinist Pig Of A Network!

Most of the American public (not necessarily me included) like to watch Americans. And like someone said, NBC is a business and all about ratings. I would have loved to see more of Henin-Bartoli, but the majority of Americans don't even know who these 2 players are, so NBC makes a business decision. And honestly, seeing someone get steamrolled 6-1 in the final set is probably not as exciting as Roddick-Gasquet (which is an upset also BTW).

Roddick's american and to be honest that match was the better quality, you can't blame NBC for that decision.

Re: NBC Is A Chauvinist Pig Of A Network!

Roddick's match was the better quality? Really? I'm sorry but Roddick to me is so unimpressive. 5 long sets and all he could manage was service winners and the occasional volley. Virtually zero baseline winners at all. It was driving me nuts because I was hoping he would close the match out and they would show Marion and Justine, but Andy never showed the ability to open up the court and grab victory.

The little I did see of Bartoli and Henin, however, was fierce. Marion played stunning, perfect tennis. And I think her "big girl" physique adds a ton of interest to the sport; even 'casual' fans would tune-in to watch a fat girl whipping the world #1 in the semifinals of Wimbledon!

Unfortunately the US Networks have never given fair coverage to foreign tennis players, let alone foreign women players (Hingis, Kournikova excluded). This didn't matter when American tennis forces such as Capriati, Seles, Lindsay, Venus, Serena, Andy, Andre, Pete, etc. were dominating. Since the networks continued the pattern of following Americans almost exclusively, we are in a position where nobody in the States knows any of the big names in tennis, and the only tennis anyone really sees is Roddick and Blake getting their asses beat over and over again. Not suprisingly, interest in the sport had died in this country... and NBC/ESPN et. al are partly to blame.
