Re: NBC Is A Chauvinist Pig Of A Network!
Roddick's match was the better quality? Really? I'm sorry but Roddick to me is so unimpressive. 5 long sets and all he could manage was service winners and the occasional volley. Virtually zero baseline winners at all. It was driving me nuts because I was hoping he would close the match out and they would show Marion and Justine, but Andy never showed the ability to open up the court and grab victory.
The little I did see of Bartoli and Henin, however, was fierce. Marion played stunning, perfect tennis. And I think her "big girl" physique adds a ton of interest to the sport; even 'casual' fans would tune-in to watch a fat girl whipping the world #1 in the semifinals of Wimbledon!
Unfortunately the US Networks have never given fair coverage to foreign tennis players, let alone foreign women players (Hingis, Kournikova excluded). This didn't matter when American tennis forces such as Capriati, Seles, Lindsay, Venus, Serena, Andy, Andre, Pete, etc. were dominating. Since the networks continued the pattern of following Americans almost exclusively, we are in a position where nobody in the States knows any of the big names in tennis, and the only tennis anyone really sees is Roddick and Blake getting their asses beat over and over again. Not suprisingly, interest in the sport had died in this country... and NBC/ESPN et. al are partly to blame.
