I know it seems like no body could not beat the Williams Sisters. but IMO this is where those other players needed to play at their best every time!

they are beatable! look at this year. Henin beat Serena and almost beat Venus. Kim beat Venus, even Schnyder can beat Serena! I believe Testud and Seles also beat Venus!

But the contenders are not consistent enough to beat them all the time. When they are on! they could beat everybody else! Why do other players or commentator complain about them dominating! i didn't see any big deal when Martina H, Steffi, Martina N, or Chris Evert dominating the game back then! but why do they complain when Williams win all the time!

I am not Williams #1 fan, but i know what they did to the game is not wrong! It actually good! also what Kournikova dif for the game, people are actually enjoying tennis! we had a chance to see Women's and Mixed doubled on TV.

it only proofed me that if you want to be the best! you have to play a high level tennis all the time! high level tennis in this era meaning POWER TENNIS and also being smart on scheduling yourself! and to be FIT!!

what do you think??

when steffi was winning people started actions that she ruined tennis! and Nav and Monica were everything but popular either when they were the best!
but the thing is Venus and Serena are two people, as Nav said yesterday too people should let go that they are sisters and see them as different persons and enjoy their rivarly!
For once I agree with her!

WHERE were you when others were dominating RHZ?

The public and press ALWAYS does this to the top woman who dominates or seems to dominate. It took Tracy Austin and Martina beating Chris to turn Evert from the "Ice Queen" to lovable. Martina gots cheers in the early 80s-until she got to dominate. When Navratilova faced Graf at the 86 US Open the American crowd was with the German! Only after Steffi won the Grand slam in 1988 did the fans return to cheering for Martina. Now Graf was the cold tenis machine. It took Seles to make Steffi more likeable again.

Monica was at the top of her game in 1993-and throughly for it by all her fans. Hamburg changed all that.

Venus and Serena will be the same. They were more attractive figures when they were younger, "cuter" and losing more often!
Some of their fans want to believe race is a big factor, but 90% of it is basic dislike of whoever is on top. Hingis has gone from playing the "cute" ingenue(1996-) to monster by 1999, back to fan favorite again.

When someone knocks the sistes from the top they'll get more fans. Tennis history repeats itself

maybe he wasn't following tennis when other players were dominating?

some fans couldn't walk or talk in 1986, let alone follow tennis and analyse fan opinions to a sociology degree level.

It's true.

Alot of the so called "affection" towards Original
Martina, Steffi , ASV or even Monica came afterwards.

The only players I could remember people gushing
over were Sabatini, Chrissy, Tracey Austin and
Evonne Goolagong.

It's been said over and over- whenever one player
dominates the media says "women's tennis is a non-event".

P.S I was there. I went to University in the late 1980's.
I use to watch a bit of tennis now and again on ABC
and NBC in my kiddie years. This was before cable TV etc..

Unfortunately, I don't agree that race accounts for a minority of the backlash that Venus and Serena have received.

I am old enough to remember Martina/Chrissy, Steffi, and Monica during their dominant years. I don't recall that many media outlets in the States reacted so adversely to their championship play.

well monica was accused of planning her own stabbing for publicity!
just to show how some journalists hated her!

You are corrected. You might "remember" Martina and Chrissy and Steffi and Monica but you could not have been paying that much attention to tennis if you don't know that about them. There weren't nearly as many media outlets. What makes it all bigger is the net. It puts people in touch with tennis daily instead of occasionally. That increases the amount of talk as well as the fan base.

And, "many ... media outlets reacting adversely" is exaggeration. They get good press. Finding some bullshit on the internet does not translate to "media outlets" any more than the fabricated "news stories" posted here do.

As for people gushing over Chrissy,"The Ice Queen" , I've seen more gushing over the Williams since they came on the tour, both in the press and outside.

Thanks for the question, rhz, but no matter how many times this gets pointed out, (and it has been many times) the same people will call it racism so they can denounce it and others.

I was old enough to follow the transition from navratilova to graf, from graf to seles which ended with that horrobile accident in Hamburg! and back to graf again! then Hingis and now Williamses

yes internet was not there back then, and media was limited to tv radio magazines and newspaper so maybe i was not following as much. bu as far as i remember, commentators and viewers and other players did not complain as much as now to the Williams and also to Kournikova

So what if they win all the time? it is not their faults!!!
So what if she's famous and beautiful??? she never asked to be born beautiful!!

There is a difference. Other rivalries featured contrasting styles, contrasting personalities. It was interesting to see them play each other. Venus and Serena have the same style. It is boring.

There can still be great matchups. For my money the Hingis-Venus semi at the US Open 2 years ago was great. And even if Serena did win the French it will always be more of a question mark about either sister winning on clay.

Serena will be the first woman since 1997 to have a shot at 3 slams in one year-that's exciting If she wins it she'll repeat what Billie Jean King did in 1972 by taking 3 slams after misssing Australia. It will be interesting to see her chase history and see if she catches up to Venus and Hingis

I remember Chris, Martina N, Tracy Austin, Andrea Yagger and everyone since. I was young when I started watching. I have no doubt the internet is causing a lot of the feeling that others didn't have to endure the same scrutiny as the Williams sisters. However, I have to say there is no way the TV commentators spent the same amount of time bringing up negativities during the Chris everet/ Navritalova matches as they have during Venus/Serena matches also as soon as they have. We haven't even been a good year into the "domination". It took years of domination before the media got tired of it with Chrissy and then Martina and then Graf. That I think is the biggest difference in the treatment the sisters have received.

I think people main prob with the sisters is if they are to domminate tennis when they play they must take their matches to another level of tennis.

i.e when monica and steffi played in the early 1990's

Williams Vs Willams tends to be dull-apart from this last final but there is still room for improvement!
