Personally, I don't understand what the naysayers didn't see...

I'm the guy that made the Marion Bartoli top 5 thread a few months back...to the great amusement to many of you here. But, why was it so unlikely?

Sure, she's in poor shape, but a loser does not a little extra weight make. Seles was top 5 for nearly a decade in worse shape than Marion is in now.

She returns so well, she's fearless...that's the difference between Marion and Ivanovic...Marion isn't satisfied with this round, she wants one better...

Closing thought-Can you imagine how spectacular she's going to get now? She'll have sponsor money to hire trainers, coaches, probably go to Bolleteri's for a while...As a diamond in the rough she took wimbledon by storm...I can't wait to see where she goes from here.

it's called top 10idis... anything outside of the top 10 and tennis fan's don't touch it. wait that isn't a fan... just a front runner.

I totally agree. She has an incredibly powerful game. And her movement is not that bad.
She is smart too. Look at these drop shots and lobs.

These people never really looked at her game, they just saw a girl with a few extra pounds, not the best mover or server on tour, but they didnt see her qualities.
By the way, as far as I can remember Seles had a few extra pounds too, so does Serena, and Capriati too at some point.

Talking about Seles - Marion was a fan, and you now see why. I see Seles in her game now.

Amelie

Dodin - Andrianjafitrimo - Kuznetsova - Kvitova - Rezai - Razzano - Mladenovic - Osaka - Cornet - Garcia - Hesse

Most of them probably didn't see her play and just had the "big" reputation

Hantuchova/Sugiyama def. (1) Black/Huber 6-7(0) 6-3 7-6(10) saving SEVEN match points, down 2-5 in the third, and down 2-6 in the third set tiebreak in three hours

Ai Sugiyama. Jie Zheng. Zi Yan. Tamira Paszek.
Yaroslava Shvedova. Nuria&MariaJose. Yung-Jan Chan. Elena Vesnina. Flavia Pennetta.

Yeah. I remember seeing her in 2003 (I think) at the French playing Capriati. She was really rough around the edges back then, but I remember she put together a solid game and broke Capriati, and I knew at that point that there was something special about her. It took her years to put it all together, sort of like how Lindsy didn't quite blossom as soon as many great players do. But, with the angles and the ingenuity, and the mental fortitute, I mean, she really is spectacular. And she did this while in poor shape. Again, I can't wait to see what she does from here!

I knew Marion was fearless when I saw her play Lindsay Davenport at the US Open a few years back and she was returning Lindsay's serve standing inside the baseline! I can't say I expected this, but it's so nice to see somebody unexpected make it through.

The only bad thing, Marion seems to be a slow starter, and that may be trouble against Venus, since she won't get over-confident.

Yulia Putintseva is my favourite tennis player and will be my favourite until she retires.
