Is this beiing respectful or disrespectful?

Don't know what to think about this comment from Serena on Justine.
Is she finally giving her some credit or is it just the opposite?

She played a very high-quality game, probably some of her best tennis. If I had been healthy I think I would have won, definitely.

Oh God here we go. It was a compliment followed by what the speaker belived to be the truth. Henin said the same about Miami...that she should have won...

I think with her serve and her athleticism, her power, her court mobility, I just think when she’s on, she’s the greatest player we’ve ever seen, ever. Now, whether her record is the greatest remains to be seen because she hasn’t retired yet. But I think she is really the greatest player. I have seen Martina and Steffi at their best. There are little chinks in those players’ armor, but it was a different era, where you didn’t need to be the perfect player.

Well at least she said that. It's still credit. But people will always disagree. Serena should be given credit for at least going out there and fighting. She could have tanked just like she did at Roland Garros.

Re: Is this beiing respectful or disrespectful?

Love it or hate it Serena believes she is the best player in the world at her best.

Is Serena "just tellin' it like it is" or she is being arrogant and ungracious in defeat? We've been having this argument for many years on this board. It will never be resolved because people are always going to see it the way they want to.

I'm torn. I know at her best Serena is the best player out there, and probably the best ever to pick up a racquet. On other hand i don't think it's a compliment to say "she played really well, but i'm better"

Agreed... she gave Justine more credit this time even though the match was closer than in Paris so... Serena!

Just before that she said that she herself was only 40-50%. So, it sounds like a backhanded compliment to me.

What's disrespectful about it? It took three sets to take an injured Serena out.

Björk
Imperious in victory. Never conceiving the possibility of defeat. The greatest of her era. The self-belief, that smile, backhand, muscles, serve, personality, all larger than life. There's no greater sight in women's tennis than watching Serena J. Williams go to work.
The others are Great, but Serena's the Greatest

She was outplayed. But by then end she was giving up. Watch the last 3 games.

Re: Is this beiing respectful or disrespectful?

Anyways, she is arrogant and that's why we love her... But still she is the only one who can act this way, since she's the best [when in form] player!

Re: Is this beiing respectful or disrespectful?

I don't think it was disrespectful. She gave Justine props but still feels her best could have been beaten what Justine dished up today. That's Serena's opinion--she's allowed to have it. The same ppl who bitch and moan about her being too arrogant, etc would be the first ones to complain if Serena, or any other player, were all sweetness and light and agonizingly politically correct.
