At first I thought Venus and Jen would be Serena's main challengers.

Jen seems to be Serena's main competitor. She has taken 3 sets of Serena and had very close sets determined by only 1 break in their matches. Venus has yet to take a set off her.

They key to Jen's rivalry with Serena is that she is not afraid of Serena. I think most girls get intimidated after a while. Jen doesn't seem to and responds quite well to Serena's challenge. It is more mental than anything, although both their FH are great!

I was really looking forward to a Jen-Serena SF at Wimby!

Now we'll have to wait until God knows when!

The only reason serena has dropped sets to jen is becuase she has always played some what sloppey in their matches, look at the unforced error count from serena, whereas against venus especially today and miami serena was in the zone and played perfect tennis.

Lol at jen beating venus, jen had her best year last year and couldn't beat her, what makes u think that she could do it this player considerably worse.

JenCap seems to have the game most suited to handling Serena - she's fast on court and her groundstrokes hardly ever break down. She had set points in Miami this year as well so they've had pretty close matches, even in Serena's straight set wins.

I don't know why some think Jen is doing so bad this year. At least she's won a grand slam.

Its not that shes doing badly, its that she's not living up to her potential. The fact that she has won a grandslam and no other tournament is the reason people are giving her flack. The point is since she won a grandslam she should be winning lesser tournaments and shes not doing that.

Jen had close matches with serena but she is not the top ten player who beat serena this year, justine is (though it was a close thirdset tie break).

Justine is a good opponent for Serena. Even though she lost to Serena at the Italian, it was in a close two sets. Berlin was very close also, but that day, coming out in Justine's favor.
I think if Serena had played Monica, Kim, or Jelena this year, she would have dumped them in two easy sets. Can't say that about Lindsay, if she was playing though.
BTW, Good Job Anna!!! Stretching Serena, the best deserved #1 in a while, to three close sets!

azarenka - pavlyuchenkova - li - jankovic
garcia - bencic - paszek - rus - kanepi - kuznetsova - stephens
bouchard - karatantcheva - larcher de brito - voegele - lim - mladenovic

mary pierce - forever #1
vaidisova - kournikova - golovin - henin
the boys - federer - gasquet - del potro - haase - nishikori

I think Serena would have had problems with Monica. They had very close matches late last year, which they split. Serena can't depend on Monica to choke matches away like Justine. And who knows about Kim, she did beat Venus in Hamburg. Dokic probably would've been an easy victory.

Serena doesnt depend on Justine to choke matches away. I dont know where you get that from. To win against Justine you have to play well. Shes choked about twice in her career and now everyone who beats her wins because she choked.

Why would anyone say that Jennifer Capriati has done "well" against Serena? Serena has beaten Jennifer five straight times and Jennifer has never beaten Venus in her entire career (she is 0-4 lifetime and 0-3 over the past year). Capriati is 4-10 lifetime against Serena and Venus in her career, and is 0-4 against Serena this year. As for Jennifer beating Venus: It simply hasn't happened and until it does happen (and I mean more than once or twice, LOL) all this ill-informed talk about Capriati being truly competitive with either Serena or Venus is not true based on the actual objective record. ONE tournament win (the AO, 2002) in the past 12 months by Capriati does not in any way equal the 8 tournament wins and two GS wins of Venus and 7 tournament wins, 3 GS wins of Serena over this same 12 month period! Gimme a break! Let's be honest for once...
