Eating That Delicious Corvus
I have an admission to make. I don't remember exactly when she said it. But I can't forget the words. At the time, it made me think that Venus might be delusional.
Hingis and Davenport were picking up titles left and right. Graf may still have been in contention.
But Venus, when asked about who she considered to be her biggest rival - or biggest threat, I can't remember the exact wording - replied: My sister Serena.
At that time, Serena Williams looked far from threathening. 'Promising', 'up-and-coming'. Yes. But hardly someone the elite players would lose sleep over.
She can't seriously believe that. Or perhaps she's just trying to make her sister happy - I said to myself.
But having seen Serena conquer first the clay of Paris and now the grass of London by beating Venus herself in the final both times, I am reaching out for a little gravy to make that corvus (that's 'crow' to the not so Latin-inclined) go down more easily.
