You're seeing the best players on the pro tour.
If they were no weight classes in boxing, you would wonder why most boxers are heavyweights.
Henin's accomplishments at her size are staggering. She might be the greatest women athlete ever, pound for pound. She consistently beats players over 50 pounds heavier than she is.

Right now, there's just such an emphasis on power in the game. Obviously, that favors taller, heavier women. Justine and to a lesser extent Coezter and Nastya (although at 5'8" she's tall by many standards) showed there's still room for the smaller, quicker player. It's interesting in that some of the new players coming up don't appear to be as big (Chacky's about Myskina's size, King is actually fairly compact, there are a couple of others well under 6'0).

It will be interesting to see if the trend towards "Big Babe" tennis continues, or if it's just an anomoly of the 00s.

I guess all sorts of women become players but it is the bigger, taller ones that become more successful.

exactly, it's natural selection. There will always be shorter players, who are still taller than the average woman, but the trend is for the best tennis players to be generally taller

Artificial selection.

Because of equipment changes, the serve is huge in tennis today. It is a means to a great many free points if you are a good at it. Tall players have natural advantages over short ones not only because as a general rule they will have more weight to apply to a serve (or any shot) but also because they are hitting down into the service box from a steeper angle rather than into it from a shallow angle, making it easier to have a higher % of first serves and easier to have better-positioned serves.

I'd bet that if the ATP/WTA went back to wooden raquets, within ten years you'd see an evolution back toward shorter players, because the serve wouldn't have nearly the importance it does under the current technological specs. Movement would be more important than raw power--and better movers have lower centers of gravity.

Most professional athletes are tall. Baseball players, basketball players, even golfers are usually over 6 feet tall.
