Sharapova on Serena (going into Wimbledon)

by Matthew Cronin
FoxSports - Tennis

Even the proud Sharapova, who says her injured shoulder has healed to the point where she should be able to rip some big serves, is giving Serena's style a nod on grass. She knows better than anyone that when Serena is hitting the right spots with her serve and launching huge returns, that it's almost impossible to get into points against her. When Serena is enforcing her style of first-strike tennis and shortening points like she's grabbing the end of a noose, she becomes so confident that she can cut loose on her groundstrokes without a care in the world. Hence, Sharapova's 6-1, 6-2 loss to Williams in the Australian Open final.

"When she's playing well and she's serving the way she can really serve, what you're hoping to do is probably hold your serve, which does put a lot of pressure on her," Sharapova said. "She has one of the biggest serves on tour. She's physically one of the strongest. But you never know what can happen. There's a very thin line in tennis. A lot of it is mental. A point here, a point there, can change many things. [But] Serena is definitely mentally tough. You can see that on the court. She's a fighter. She goes for her shots. If she's going to lose the match, she wants to lose it on her terms."

Serena was amazing in the AO final and Maria hadn't played that great throughout the whole tournament despite reaching the final. Then in Miami, Maria's shoulder was really playing havoc. Maria has beaten Serena twice, so I wouldn't say she was hopeless against her. I can't wait til they play again when Maria's shoulder is back to normal.

yeah MAsha didn't play good at AO only because Serena didn't allow her because she was whipping the court with Masha , of course she can beat Serena but last results were

if you're talking about injuries being a reason for a loss:

2004 YEC Final and she was 6 points away from winning

But how about the Wimbledon 2004 final? Was Serena really playing that bad..... I think the matches will become closer once Sharapova's shoulder is healed, so I, too, can't wait for another match-up when both players are healthy.

Re: Sharapova on Serena (going into Wimbledon)

We'll see...at least she got one thing right. Serena needs to serve well. Her serve was very weak at RG, couldn't save bp's, getting broken all the time. Can't afford that at Wimby.

Re: Sharapova on Serena (going into Wimbledon)

Nice words from Masha.

Quote:
I think with her serve and her athleticism, her power, her court mobility, I just think when she’s on, she’s the greatest player we’ve ever seen, ever. Now, whether her record is the greatest remains to be seen because she hasn’t retired yet. But I think she is really the greatest player. I have seen Martina and Steffi at their best. There are little chinks in those players’ armor, but it was a different era, where you didn’t need to be the perfect player.

Re: Sharapova on Serena (going into Wimbledon)

Maria really has changed her attitude. In 2004 she really was disrespectful maybe because of her age or because she let the hype get to her. From 2006 on she really became polite and in 2007 she´s really gracious.
I like her more now. She´s right about Serena tough. Serena will have to serve very well because when she does the rest of her game clicks easier and on grass that´s just deadly.
