Chakvetadze upsets Jankovic

Sat 23 Jun, 07:46 PM

'S-HERTOGENBOSCH, Netherlands (AFP) - Russian third seed Anna Chakvetadze won the 130,000-euro WTA tournament here on Saturday, upsetting top seed Jelena Jankovic 7-6 (7/2), 3-6, 6-3, in the final.

The players had to be patient as the first set was interrupted by rain four times. The 20-year-old Chakvetadze had led 5-0 but just managed to hang on to win the set on a tiebreak.

Serb Jankovic, playing with a bandage on her left thigh, hit back to win the second set 6-3 though, looking as though she was in pain on many occasions, she lost the final set by the same score and was not able to repeat her tournament success in Birmingham a week earlier.

For eighth world-ranked Chakvetadze, it was a second title this season, following her victory in Hobart at the beginning of the year, and her fourth title ever.

YEAH ANNA!!! Giving us yet another storyline going into Wimbledon. Jelena had a bandage on her left thigh? Its amazing she hasn't had something else wrapped as much tennis as she's played. Will she hold up over the fortnight? Should be interesting.

Definitely congrats to her! I'm hoping she does really well at Wimbledon. Hope JJ's ready and well for Wimbledon, but her left thigh could cause problems, but it's probably really sore since JJ plays in every tournament, non-stop.
