Anyone at Eastbourne ask about the future of the event?

I spoke to a marshal on the way out yesterday and he said that they had just heard it would definitely be held next year, but after that the future for the event is unsure. Anyone hear anything different?

Is the problem lack of a sponsor, or the WTA wanting to have an event in London (at Queen's or Lords Cricket Ground are the rumours)?

Mirjana Lucic : Australian Open doubles champ and back in Top 100

Jelena Jankovic : US Open finalist 2008 and World No. 1

Jennifer Capriati : 3 Grand Slams, Olympic Gold and World No.1

Hello Mark... so long!

I think Eastbourne should stay... I love the court and the tradition of this tournament. Dont ruin it guys how you did it moving the Year end from NYC and the Hilton head tourney.

I shall miss the seaside as much as the tennis if they cancel it

Re: Anyone at Eastbourne ask about the future of the event?

I spoke to one of the tournament staff and he said the event would definitely be there next year, but they weren't sure about 2009 as the LTA is reviewing all it's tournaments. The big priority is to find a major sponsor, that would go a long way to securing the tournament in Eastbourne.
He said anyone who likes the event and location as it is should write to the LTA and WTA to support keeping it in Eastbourne. (Sounded like they would make the decision some time this year).

Re: Anyone at Eastbourne ask about the future of the event?

Please do not forget that the WTA calendar will change starting in 2009. I think Madrid will be getting a regular tour event. There will be 4 mandatory tourneys besides the Slams and I think they are Indian Wells,Miami,Madrid, and Shanghai.
At the moment, the Williams Sisters said that they will still protest not playing at IW due to an ugly incident a few years ago when Venus withdrew before playing Serena in the semis. When Serena played (and won) the final, the crowd booed her consistently.
