Sore Losers: Henin & Mauresmo

A very surprising reaction from two players that I repected.
I think they should rethink their training and attitudes real quick.
------
all-Williams final WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Justine Henin and Amelie Mauresmo aren't so sure another all-Williams Grand Slam final is a good thing for women's tennis.

Of course, they are the players who lost to the sisters in the Wimbledon semifinals Thursday.

"That's good for them," the sixth-seeded Henin said. "But I think that maybe the crowd likes also to see the other players in different Grand Slam finals."

She was beaten by two-time defending champion Venus 6-3, 6-2 in a rematch of the 2001 final. Serena followed by defeating No. 9 Mauresmo 6-2, 6-1.

It will be the third Williams vs. Williams Grand Slam championship match in the last 10 months. Venus won at the U.S. Open, while Serena won at the French Open.

"It's a little bit sad for women's tennis, but maybe it's not the point of view for everybody," Mauresmo said. "People are going to get bored about it. It was already the final at the French Open. I can't count how many people since yesterday told me, 'We don't want Williams final."

"You know, some people think like this. Some people think it's good. Everyone has a different opinion."

Not surprisingly, Venus has a different take on the subject.

"It's good for tennis," she said. "It's good for Serena and I more than anything."

------

I am also worrying what else this jealousy over the Williams may span in the weak minded people that are out in the public.

Well, anyway f*ck them.

What is wrong with what she said? Some people told her they did not want to watch. She says she thinks it is boring but that others might feel another way. Big deal! I like a broad who speaks her mind.

mom3 - When the Williams lost to these players, there was never anything said by either VENUS or SERENA that was anything but complimentary.

These two made international statements despariging the Williams because they lost.

Yeah, f*ck them and YOU too!

Good effort from Tee to get one or two lines from an interview completely out of context.

Yes Justine is a really sore loser, especially after all the praise she gave to the sisters

Q. Was Venus just too good today?
JUSTINE HENIN: I think she was too strong, too good. She didn't do a lot of mistakes. She didn't let me play. She was so aggressive, so powerful, so what could I do? I started good the beginning of the match was fine, but I had to do many rallies to win the point, and that was hard.
So, no, she was simply better than me today, a lot better.

Q. What are your thoughts on an all-Williams final, that it's hard for sisters to play.
JUSTINE HENIN: I suppose that it's hard. I will never be in this situation. But I suppose that for sisters to play each other, I think it can be difficult. I understand that. Yeah, it's hard. I think they are the No. 1, No. 2 in the world. That's normal because they are the two best players in the world. But, okay, it's hard also for the other players because we have to fight a lot but we will continue. They are No. 1, No. 2, and that's a normal situation. But I'm playing for myself, and I will just try to continue on the way I did in this tournament.

Q. Do you get the feeling that the Williams sisters are pulling away from the rest of the pack, separating themselves?
JUSTINE HENIN: Yeah, I think now they are two best players in the world, and we can see it on court. So, yeah.

Q. Obviously it's good for the Williams family that they're in many finals and Grand Slams against each other. What do you think the effect is on tennis and the perceptions of the sport?
JUSTINE HENIN: I think it's difficult and maybe too early to say anything. But for sure they were both of them US Open, French Open, probably Wimbledon here. So, yeah, that's good for them. But I think that maybe the crowd like also to see the other players in different final Grand Slams.
But if they are in the final, that's because they're playing so well. So, I mean, it's a difficult situation.

I can't find Momo's interview???

Oh you have GOT to be kidding me - either that or you haven't read many interviews.

Go here:
http://www.wimbledon.com/news/interv...b00629c09.html
Click on the "Amelie Mauresmo Interview - Day 9" link. When the new window opens up, you'll see that there is a link for her Day 10 interview on the left side. (thanks to jabberwocky for posting these instructions earler)

Yes, she did say that too many all Williams finals could get boring, and that it was sad for women's tennis that the rest of the field was so far behind.

She DID NOT say that was Venus or Serena's fault. She also gave Serena a ton of praise for the way she played (funny how THAT bit hasn't been quoted - but I suppose it doesn't support the points some people are trying to make)

The quotes that have some of you screaming were taken WAY out of context and twisted - just as in the past people have taken quotes from Venus and Serena about what went wrong with their games during losses as "proof" that they were arrogant and never gave their opponents proper credit. What you're doing to Amelie and Juju right now is no more fair than what was done to malign the Williams sisters,

Personally, I think Amelie's an intelligent woman and I think she should have known to choose her words more carefully. But frankly if we all parsed our own statements in half so much detail as we did every last thing the players say, the discourse on this board would be a hell of a lot more constructive and intelligent.

Yes, I do think what Momo said was taken out of context.
As were Venus' remarks about Steffi not being a [good] grass court player.

They both speak the truth. If you see the crowds at wimbledon, they always cheer for the venus/serena's opponents. People want to see a bit of variety and new winners. But if henin, mauresmo and co. think the williams sisters are ruining the game, why dont they do something about it. Easier said than done though.

I can't see anything at all wrong with what Justine said.

And Amelie had just been beaten pretty badly AFTER handling Jenn pretty easily. Finding out that Serena was that much better than Jenn had to be shock. Sure Venus and Serena never say things like that after losses, but they, Venus esp. grew up in the publlic eye. They are quite media-savvy.

And while I do raher like All-Williams finals, I rather enjoyed the OZ final too, and there was nary a Williams in sight. I think jumping on the players every time they display an emotional that isn't straight out of Martha Stewart is simply unfair.
