Russians becoming the Spanish Armada of post ASV period...

A lot, kind of outthere, maybe winning a small tournament here or there, but basically irrelevant.

Here I said it.

Re: Russians becoming the Spanish Armada of post ASV period...

Has nothing to do with today. Maybe overreacting to 2007. Maybe. But is it really overreacting if you look at 2007 records for Russians?

There have been a lot of injuries. Who's healthy right now, Dinara?
8 of the top 9 are injured. Anna C had the flu.
Things will be fine.

Ummm, didn't Sharapova win the USopen less than a year ago? Is that an "irrelevant" title?

Cmon, golden, look at Russians (even when they are not injured/sick):

Maria = no serve, no confidence, players now deal with her game
Sveta = super inconsistent, always tired and often injured
Anna = doesn't really have the game to take to the next level in today's tennis
Dinara = awful mover and not much anything special there
Elena D = still no serve and is probably on the way down
Nadia = gain weight, was bad now to even worse mover, injured at keast couple of months in a year

anyone else I missed who could remotely threaten big titles?

You know, for me it is just a glass half full..

- Sharapova had her best results in last 3 Slams
- Kuznetsova got really consistent, losing again to probably an eventual Champion. Unfortunately, she might have overplayed over the course of clay season, and minor injuries definitely played a part in her loss
- Dementieva is back after injury and just won her first ever red clay tourney
- Nastya might be coming back from injury too
- Anna is constantly improving, and for as long as a player is still improving, I don't think it's fair to say that she can't get to the next level
- Dinara has steadied her results. Just an unlucky draw here
- our second-liners - Vesnina, Shvedova, Bychkova, Puchkova are adorable
- our juniors still rock

I still see plenty of things to be excited about in Russian tennis.

The only players that give worries are Nadya and Vera, but they'll be back, I am sure..

Feelings are not facts.

Maria has had the best results in the past four slams on the tour. She's no. 2 in the world. She currently holds four titles. Her serve and confidence, by the way, are much better after the French.

I don't think the rest of the Russians are very relevant, but to say Maria is irrelevant is just ignorant. You can't discount any player who wins multiple slams as a teenager.

Tell me who IS "relevant"... Is Jancovic "relevant"? Is Mauresmo still "relevant"? Is Venus relevant? Is Ivanovic "relevant" just because he made it to this final? Is she more "relevant" than Kuznetsova?

Re: Russians becoming the Spanish Armada of post ASV period...

I remember when Sharapova lost to Suarez at RG 2004. It didn't affect her. Her flat strokes are made for grass.
Zvonareva beat Ivanovic twice this year. Beat Sharapova. Played a very close final with Jankovic.
The Russian girls need to get healthy.
