Serena on clay...

...will she be patient enough on the clay to win another French Open? Justine will be even tougher ont he clay to beat ...
Serena's serve has to be more consistent (like it was in Australia) as opposed to the finals of Miami to do well.

You know, I was thinking about that. If there's a chance for Shahar to beat Serena, it will be on clay. Clay will give Shahar the slower pace and chance to chase down more of Serena's balls and frustrate her into errors. I still think Serena can beat Shahar on clay, but it will be tough.

To answer the initial post, the answer is quite clear - Serena can do anything she puts her mind to. If she wants to win Roland Garros, she can do it.

Re: Serena on clay...

Serena will be a devil on clay, but I still see her as playing the role of spoiler for Justine. I could see Serena easily beating just about any other player on clay, but Justine to me is the queen of clay until we see otherwise. And I'm not saying that's impossible, just unlikely in my mind.

Re: Serena on clay...

In 2002 Serena played close and lost a tiebreak in Berlin, then WON a close match in Rome. Then WON the RG, but Justine had lost in early rounds.

In 2003 at RG, Serena was leading 4-2 30-0 in the third when the "incident" occured. She then lost 5-7.

The only clay match tha Juju won going away was Charleston in 2003.

So, what I am saying is that Serena has been VERY competitive on clay with Juju. ...Even though her W-L vs Juju on this surface is 1-3.

Re: Serena on clay...

I think it'll be a very competitive clay season between the two of them. When Justine's not there, Serena will propably win the title, and vice-versa. I hope they meet in the RG final ( or Venus v. Serena )

Career Grand Slam in your 20s? Been there done that. Career golden slam your 30s?
There's only 1.
Been around the world, copped all 4 thrice.

Re: Serena on clay...

Little things such as court surface are really irrelevant when it comes to Serena Williams. We can speculate and moot the point but really the only factor in any of her matches is herself. At the beginning of January this year I and many other fans were suprised when she won a round in the AusOpen, now we assume she'll win the French, isnt it funny how things change so quick...cr-cr-cr-crazy!

I was practicing with Venus in Florida, and she was just killing me. I'm kind of glad she didn't make it, for my sake (laughter). You can't sleep on her because she's playing unbelievable. I got to take my chance now while she's out because when she's coming back, she's really playing like she's playing with no fear and she's practicing really hard. Yeah, she's playing unbelievable. > Serena Williams AO '07

Matches, win-loss records, surface records, etc. from 4 & 5 years ago deserve a look, but they cannot possibly tell the story of 2007. People who were going by results from back then would never in their wildest imaginations have allowed the possibility of Justine having match points on Serena on a hardcourt yesterday. I base my opinion of the clay matchup more on the recent play of both players on the surface. Serena is a big question mark there though, I'll grant you.

Since Serena won't be the No 2 seed it's entirely possible that they will have to play each other in the semis or quarter finals though (assuming that both win their matches in the earlier rounds).

Re: Serena on clay...

Well. Serena defeated Justine in the 2002 Italian Open final, just the week after Justine had defeated her in the final of Berlin.

After the Rome final, Justine herself said that there was nothing she had been able to do -- Serena had played too well.

I myself remember that Serena was incredibly focused during the 2002 clay season because she BADLY wanted a second grandslam title after almost 3 years without one.

And she played breathtakingly in her synchronisation of brutal power hitting and court coverage, overcoming Pierce, Capriati and an altogether more experienced clay court player than herself in Venus.

Re: Serena on clay...

Serena will have to pick up her conditioning and have much better foot work to beat Henin on clay. Fortunately, Henin and Mauresmo are great clay court players and Serena will not beat them unless she works for it.

I think Serena is a great athlete and a fantastic player. However, I want her to get it together and live up to her true potential. I am glad that she is a fighter and I get pumped up when she wins but her half strokes, mishits and poor footwork have to go.

Hopefully she will get it together for the clay court season and we fans get to see some good tennis along with the drama.

Re: Serena on clay...

Serena could possibly win the French this year.

But i still give the edge to justine.. she is simply amazing on clay, especially in Roland Garros which is so damn emotional for her

Re: Serena on clay...

Serena is going to need to work on her footwork and movement for the clay. She was sluggish throughout Miami with her footwork and speed around the court expect in instances where she really needed to get to a ball. I'm sure she's working on it, but one of the most vital aspects of clay-court tennis is movement. She'll need to pick that up not only in order to beat Justine, but other top players on the dirt.
