Can Serena finish the year at #1?

I definitely think so

she's got a big lead in the race to the YEC
She's going to play a light schedule but if she choses her tournies smartly, she has a chance to win a lot of them

Anastasia Myskina

Radwanska - S. Williams - V. Williams - Kerber

Absolutely. Nothing to defend till the USO no? Then nothing after?

If she stays healthy, i think she will.

She has to defend her Cincy semi-final points and L.A Semi-final points. But thats it

She has so few points to defend, I mean she'll easily improve upon the US Open 4R, I just hope she plays a lot and not just around the Slams...

Re: Can Serena finish the year at #1?

Serena's got the game to be Y-E #1, but will she play enough tournaments to get the necessary points? That's always the question.

Also depends on how the next few players in line perform in coming months; they have some say in it, too.

Re: Can Serena finish the year at #1?

People, how many points Serena has to defend is completely pointless.

Year-end ranking = Race ranking. Look at the race and you will see that Serena is at the top.
So if she maintains her lead until the end of the season, she will be #1.

Not that difficult.

Yes. Anyone who thinks she can't is crazy. If she does well in the slams and picks up a few events here and there then she will regain that #1 ranking.

The Williams Sisters

It's great to be a fan of the two most talented women in tennis.

Only IDIOTS count out the Williams sisters!!!
Serena: 13 Slams, ranked: #1
Venus: 7 Slams, ranked: #2

No points to defend at Roland Garros + Wimbledon... It's sure she can!

Re: Can Serena finish the year at #1?

If she can win all four grand slams - duh.
I think she needs to win another slam, maybe even three in order to keep a lead over others like Justine and Maria who play a full schedule compared to Serena's light [ only 10 or so ] tournaments. Remember Clijsters was # 1 with no slams while Serena held 3? [ 2003 American Summer ]. With Miami under her belt, winning Charleston, Berlin, or Rome will help her cause. It will depend on her outer-slam performances -- not her slams. She'll be #1 again but Year Ending? I don't know.

Re: Can Serena finish the year at #1?

Hmm, you gotta bear in mind she is far behind in ranking points, and Justine, Sharapova and Mauresmo will win titles ect to increase theres.

But, not many points to defend, i think she'll be top 5 and maybe no. 1.

She's certainly playing like a no.1 beating the current no.1 and no.2 in the world!
