IW Envious Of Miamai; Trying To Manufacture Excitement By Coercion

The excitement in this tournament has been tremendous.
Constrast that with Indian Wells, where the field was so weak, it did not deserve to be called a Tier I.

Now we hear all these new rule of making that tournament mandatory for everyone.
What they should to ask how Miami organizers how thay have been able to make this tournament so attractive and generate so much buzz.

Instead of trying to get more top palyers at gun point.

Re: IW Envious Of Miamai; Trying To Manufacture Excitement By Coercion

Well, the reason that Miami had such a good field was because it was mandatory. I for one don't think that Justine, the number #1, for example, would have played here if it wasn't mandatory. So, it is really unfair for IW, that Miami was mandatory, beucase it got all the good players. I think only the Sisters don't like IW, and that it is really split betwen the other players as which they prefer IW or Miami. Justine, Hantuchova, Lindsay and others prefer IW.

Go Brazilian girls!

It it were only the sisters who did not like IW, how the field has been so weak. The 2 finalists did were out here early.

I understand why Dani would like IW. it hold goo emmory.
She won her first title there, beating Hingis, which brought her loads of name recognition and high expectation.
She won again this year.

By that logic every tier I should be mandatory. We wouldn't want any other tier I events getting jealous, now would we?

This argument is a little shortsighted. Indian Wells isn't forcing anyone to play there .. the WTA is. As well, before Miami was made mandatory, the draws looks very similar ( Miami and Indian Wells ), with Miami having the Williams of course. So are all draws weak if they do not have Serena or Venus? Davenport and Henin would easily play Indian Wells over Miami. The organizers are not to blame here.

As well, with a Middle Eastern tour at the end of February and then a trek to California, and then with 5 weeks of Southeastern American tournaments(Miami/Amelia/Charleston) .. the logical step of eliminating the California trip is clear. Many players do the Miami/Amelia/Charleston triple and skip Indian Wells.

With the loss of San Diego, I anticipated Indian Wells to move to the American summer months but I was wrong.

Because IW is the week before Miami and Miami is mandatory so many players don't want to play a 2 week tournament just before. Even I'm not that dense.

Indian Wells in the summer? Are you kidding? The heat would make Melbourne feel like Alaska.

Miami hasn't been able to sell-out the women's final this year. There are still seats available, even with #1 player in the world and the resurgent Serena Williams playing for the first time in four years.

IW is the largest attended tournament outside of the GS tournaments. Better attended than Miami.

Its no surprise why IW is "IN."

That would be way more logical than having four mandatory tournaments, and two of them back-to-back.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

even before Miami was made mandatory didn't it always get better fields than Indian Wells. especially in the early 2000s

I remember Capriati didn't play at Indian Wells very often

Queen Vee, Super Rena, Krazy Kuzzie

Because there's nothing like playing in a desert in the summer at Indian Wells.

Re: IW Envious Of Miamai; Trying To Manufacture Excitement By Coercion

I think Indian Wells is deserving of Tier I status, but it shouldn't be mandatory. Forcing the top players to play (essentially) 3 1/2 weeks of top-flight tennis isn't the solution to stemming injuries and exhaustion, especially since slow hard courts are typically the most damaging to the body. Make Miami mandatory, and make either a clay or grass event mandatory (depending on what surface Madrid is) to spread the wealth out a little. Plus, it's not a smart move for coverage in the USA, where the tournaments are held, since March isn't a tennis month. It's a college basketball month. Trying to raise the public profile is all wonderful, but back-to-back "crown jewel" tournaments isn't smart, especially the timing and location of them.
