Venus had a solid career but won't be winning any slams this year

I just don't see Venus winning a slam this year not if Justine and Serena continue to play this well. Add Maria Sharapova to the mix and Mauresmo and it will be very tough for Venus. It looks like Venus is entering the Martina Hingis category she can't serve good and she loses to top players. Venus hasn't beaten a top 10 player in two years. Its all about Serena now as Venus fades into the background. I wonder how much longer Venus can tolerate the mediocore results. Yeah she won a tier III event but that's not exactly a big deal while Serena won a grand slam the Australian Open.
It must really suck to be Venus to always have another sibling that is so much more talented and superior. Serena's got the grit that Venus used to have but now lacks. Richard was very honest when he critcized Venus in the Miami Herald after her loss to Sharapova. Perhaps Venus needs to grow up and admit her serve is a liabilty. Because the way things look Serena is just going to continue to floush into grand slam glory as Venus struggles. Tracy Austin was correct she said on MSNBC.COM not to expect Venus to have Serena like results this year because Venus serve is such a weakness.

wasn't tracy saying the same thing about serena at the AO, don;t expect us to take anything seriously that comes out of her mouth.

Rena- a tennis great! 22 at striking distance.

Re: Venus had a solid career but won't be winning any slams this year

actually tracy austin said she doesn't expect Venus to rocket to the top as quickly as Serena did because Venus needs more matchplay to find her rythm. Mostly because Venus plays high risk tennis and she needs more rythm. I often find myself disappoionted in Venus as a player as well because she is soooo much better than she what she showed against Sharapova and all of 2006. Everyone is sort of writing her off as the forgotten sister already but I don't think that will be the case. I think Venus will storm back and maybe win a slam this year (hopefully she doesn't have to beat Serena to do so). Yes Memphis is only a Tier III but that's not what was important. What was important was how Venus played. So few errors and such clean hitting and amazing serving. Since 2003 I've only seen that once before and that was at Wimbledon 2005 QF/SF and parts of the final. I don't care who she played across the net because even against the worst player Venus makes errors and a gives away free points and games. What she showed in Memphis is encouraging because no matter who she plays if she plays the way she did in Memphis she will most likely come out the winner. Although I said the same thing after Wimbledon 2005. I only hope Serena inspires Venus again like she has done twice before.

Nonesense. What do you know about tennis.
Venus' ability is not that of Tim Henman. Even if she can not win a
grandslam this year or in the future, it doesn't matter because she had
done all of that.
You should be concerned that not even one British female player can
qualify for common TIER IV.

And thanks for the wonderful insight of yours - but no one cares - Did anyone expect her to win in 05? - nope.

Re: Venus had a solid career but won't be winning any slams this year

Go Venus! Venus has proven many times her ability to do anything when she puts her head to it. No one would have imagined she would win Wimbledon in 05, but she did it. Serena's success lately has made her more hungry. She had two great matches in Miami, but came up against a tough opponent in Sharapova, even though Sharapova wasn't even close to her best form. The wind was a factor this week, but the real truth is that Venus hadn't played a top 10 player in a while and she had to go for more. She was ready for it, but she didn't have a good day. She'll be back with a vengence

I agree that Venus may be falling into a stagnant category like Martina but it's too early to call.

As well, Venus defeated Patty Schnyder TWICE last year and on CLAY of all surfaces, who was in the top ten. She did so with a solid clay schedule. Venus needs matchplay and rhythm -- clearly.

She may not be Serena with achievements but Venus will surprise us again in the future.

Nothing wrong with Vee's game a little match play won't solve. Vee like Serena in her last two matches get a bit excited and sometimes find it hard to get a ball on the court. All Venus needs to do is relax and when she does woe on the WTA.

Beat'em down Ms Williams, beat'em down!
SERENA PRINCESS OF POWER

Victoria Duval - coming to a slam near you
Françoise Abanda definitely a future #1 --- Taylor Townsend devastation on the march
Venus and Serena ferocious grannies --- Kimiko Date Krumm great granny still doing her thing.

Re: Venus had a solid career but won't be winning any slams this year

Serena's was going to comeback it was just a matter of Serena improving her fitness. Venus reminds me of Martina Hingis they both are champions but their days of grand slam glory are over. Serena and Henin are too strong and consistent add Sharapova and Mauresmo it will be too tough for either Venus or Martina. The serve is the weakness of both women. Serena's problems were physical while Venus problems are psychological. The twelve double faults against Sharapova demonstrate Venus has absolutely no confidence in her serve. Venus gives a tough talk in press conferences but on the court its the same thing. Whenever Venus loses you always got to look to see how many double faults she hits. All tennis players double fault but the problem with Venus and Martina Hingis is they double fault too much. The second serve of Serena is the best in women's tennis it has pace to it. Venus second serve is too tentative she just has nothing on it. The mental fortitude the belief that the second serve can work is her problem. I dont get it, why can't Venus just hit the second serve harder? Its something in her mind where she just has absolutely no confidence in her serve where she gets timid and afraid. Another I noticed is Serena can pull back when she realizes she is making errors. Against Peer tonight Serena noticed that she was making mistakes so she pulled back a bit and became more patient. Not Venus. Venus never does that and that's her downfall Venus can be making a gazillion errors and she will still hit hard she will not pull back and be more patient like Serena.

Don't expect anything from Venus in the clay court season either. She's had ten French Open appearances and only got past the quaterfinals once and that was five long years ago. I can see Serena winning the French Open again or doing well there because Serena has patience she knows how to use her head and pull back a bit and be more patient. Venus is incapable of doing that.

Re: Venus had a solid career but won't be winning any slams this year

The key issue is that Venus now suffers from consistency problems. Compare her match against Peer in Memphis and the one against Sharapova in Miami. Night & day. If she plays like that final in Memphis, she could win a slam again, but it would likely be Wimbledon or the US. I'm willing to write her off from ever winning the French & probably the Australian.
