If Justine wins the final......

....would that be considered as an upset? Who is the favourite going into this match? What are the odds that bookies have placed?

My opinion is that Serena will be the favourite. She won the AO and has handled all her opponents fairly easily (including the #2 player in the world) since the AO. She did have problems with Shahar Peer though.

However, Justine missed the AO and is now playing herself into fine form. She is also the #1 ranked player in the world. But most people feel that if Serena is on form, she is the best of the best.

For me, I will consider whoever wins on the finals day to be the currently best (women) player in the world, regardless of whether the one or the other played poorly, as playing good when it counts is also an important factor.

Also, since I've always wanted to do a poll, who do you THINK is the favourite going into this match?

Re: If Justine wins the final......

I don't think Justine winning is an upset. She's the number one player in the world, and she's won back to back titles this year. As the lower seed only Serena can logically cause the upset.

Agreed. Juju is the favorite but I don't think anyone, including Juju herself would be surprised if Serena won.

Re: If Justine wins the final......

it's very simple:

who ever wins this match will be considered the best in women's tennis today. the loser, will be 2nd in people's minds.

if you think about since 2002, it's really these two that have taken over women's tennis. it's time they renew their rivalry.

Re: If Justine wins the final......

Serena will go as the favorite. Her record against Justine on hard courts speaks for itself. I didn't watch today's match against Peer, but I'm pretty sure she'll bring it against Justine.

Justine still has a lot to prove against the big hitters on fast surfaces. She improved a lot in the last 2 years, and this is the real test to see where she does measure up against big hitters on a hard court.

Anyway, for Justine to win this match, she's got to avoid in any way possible trading blows with Serena from the baseline, cause 7/10, she'll end up losing, just like what happened in the US open final against Maria. She needs to vary it as much as possible, and keep Serena on her toes. Throw in a lot of slices, and come to the net and serve and volley to keep the pressure on. The key for her, other than the serve obviously, is to avoid being overpowered from the first couple of shots (just like what happens with Maria against Serena), and try to draw in Serena into rallys. Ofcourse, it's easier said than done, but the difference between Justine and Maria is that Justine has a MUCH better defense, so it won't be easy to dominate her.

Definitely looking forward to this.

I'm interested to know on what basis you think Justine is the favorite? Serena is arguably playing her best tennis since 2003, and her record against Justine is pretty much one sided on anything besides clay.

Re: If Justine wins the final......

if justine wins...then puts a smack on all the talk that she can only win against serena on clay.

if serena wins...there's no doubt that she'll be #1 at the end of the year (barring no injuries).

That's worthy of a thread of it's own and it's so very true. This match will be a battle of wills, and they know the stakes. The 2007 tennis season has really turned into quite the season!

Re: If Justine wins the final......

So far, most people have voted Serena as the favourite, even though Henin is ranked #1. I can't wait for this match!

Both are favorites going into this match. Justine has more on her side being no.1 in the world, though.
