Re: What are the good rivalries in women's tennis these days?

The best rivalries are the ones that should've happened but haven't:

Can you believe it's been 3 1/2 years since Justine last played Serena? The finesse player who developed effective power (Justine) vs. the power player who developed effective finesse (Serena). Just as that rivalry began to heat up, it ended...I have some hesitant hopes we'll see that match-up in Miami.

Henin-Capriati: the level of hunger and drive in their matchup at the US Open in 2003 is almost unprecedented in my opinion. What a shame.

What passes as the best rivalry right now is probably Justine-Amelie. Their last matchup in Dubai was pretty fantastic, and they've played often enough, with even enough results to call it a rivalry. But then of course it's soured by that AO '06 final.

Maria-Serena could be one of the great rivalries too, if they end up playing each other more.

Re: What are the good rivalries in women's tennis these days?

Mostly its been the no.1 against Maria and Justine and because Justine is so quiet well... they don't meet much and I don't remember any matches of theirs although it would seem to indicate through the rankings that these two are the rivals. (exchanging no.1s here and there)

Martina Hingis Princess of the WTA!
43 Singles Titles 37 Doubles Titles 1 Mixed Doubles Title
Singles: TI-17 TII-15 TIII-4 Doubles: TI-13 TII-13; 26 S-RUP 14 D-RUP

2x Single, 2x Double WTA Tour Championships Winner (2 S-RUP)
209 weeks at no.1 (4th place, max consecutive: 80&73), 3x no.1 year ender
No.1 both in singles & doubles for 35 weeks. (1 of 5)
Calendar Doubles Grandslam Winner (1 of 4)/Rank 4 or higher - 6 straight yrs

Chris Evert Queen of the WTA!
18 Singles Grandslams (record 7 French) 16 Singles Grandslams Runner-up
157 Singles Titles, 7x no.1 year ender (never ranked lower than 4 in career: 18 yrs)
0.9 win ratio, 90% SF or better, 125 match win streak on clay

Re: What are the good rivalries in women's tennis these days?

the one that gets the most buzz and most people talking is maria vs. serena

but if serena and justine, or if venus and justine played, there would be even more buzz because its been so long since they played.

think if hingis can stay competitive with masha, they can get a good rivalry going. but maybe not masha might be a little too strong for her, we'll see.

think the biggest rivalry on tour will end up being the battle of the blondes. masha vs nikki. thats the match that im most excited about seeing.

also want to see masha get revenge to ivanovic. a win is a win, but next time will be different.

No. One assumes that you're talking about between the players, not between the player's fans. I think the best indicator of a budding rivlary is when two players are talking about each other, like Federer and Nadal last year. Or Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg, back in the seventies.

And of course, possibly the greatest rivalry in all of professional sports, Martina Navratilova vs Christine Marie Evert.

Who on today's tour is going to play anybody 82 times? Or even half that?
