Bill Threlfall dies -- BBC commentator

He was 81.

"Slice makes the ball float" -- that's the oft-repeated phrase of his I'll remember. And his prediction that Maureen Drake (then 31) had a great future after she took a set from Venus Williams at Wimbledon 2002.

It's actually very sad to think I'll never hear his voice again. He was never an exceptional commentator, but you never got the sense that he hated women's tennis, and that's something to be said for a male commentator. He was a great admirer of the strokes of the game. I remember watching Venus vs Amelie Mauresmo at the 1998 Australian Open. Venus was already in the ascendancy, while Amelie was outside the top 100. But he marvelled at Amelie's backhand.

And I'll remember his analysis of Hingis before the 1997 Australian Open final, when he praised her all-round game and predicted her to take over. He also once called Seles a "caged monster", which I think he meant as a compliment.

RIP, Bill.

Very sad He did like women's tennis though, he called the famous Henin-Capriati match at the USO in the UK, I remember him staying very cool, whilst his female co-commentator went a bit loopy

Ivanovic * Kvitova * Serena

Sad news indeed. I loved his commentary style.

And he loved that Sampras running forehand.
