Serena's Draw - Not awful

1r Santangelo
2r Krajicek
3r Petrova
4r Jankovic
QF Kuznetsova

All matches she could lose, but all matches she can win, too.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Re: Serena's Draw - Not awful

Petrova - she can beat but Jelena Jankovic will be a very difficult to beat but if Serena does get to Rd 4 then she will be in good form herself and could try and outmuscle JJ but it would be tough

Re: Serena's Draw - Not awful

That's a great draw IMO, considering she was unseeded and the big babes in form Kim and Maria are far away.

Jank will be tough but she is easily intimidated by strong personalities like Justine and Kim and Serena is the strongest personality of them all.

This a thread very unlike you Volcana you usually put more reasoning to your posts.
Of course she can win or lose in each of those matches, the point is that, based on her form, losing to a out of top 70 ranked player Bammer last week in the Quarterfinals of a Tier III event, says pretty much where Serena stands at the moment.
At the Australian Open 2005 coming from a nice 2004 Wimbledon and Masters finals, some titles under her belt as well, that Serena had all soars of troubles to get past Petrova in the 4th round and Petrova is a better player now that she was then, i really doubt she can even win a set over Nadia playing like she did in Hobart.
I would never say she is not capable, but i believe she is out of shape phisically and tecnically wise she must be rusty, i have not seen her play yet this year, but i don´t really like her chances at this point i think the third round would be more than enough for Serena this year, i don´t see get going further based on this form.

Re: Serena's Draw - Not awful

Serena will be eager for a revenge, just like what she did to Justine (in Wimbledon 03) and Maria (in AO 05).

Someone is forgetting that Jankovic beat Serena in straight sets in a US Open Series tournament.

Honestly even at Serena's peak she would have some difficulty beating Jankovic.

Serena's draw could be worse.
If she somehow finds a way to defend her points here, then she should be happy.

what the result from Hobart suggests is that Serena will lose to Santangelo in the first round, since as a seeded player Santangelo is a considerably better ranked opponent than Bammer.

This draw is all about getting out of the 1st round for Serena. If she can do that, i wouldn't put it past her to beat Krajicek, Petrova and Jankovic and reach the QF.

Its not about the result mainly, its more about the Serena´s form and shape, would she be in better condition, better prepared phisically, i would not bet against her because sooner or later her game will come together, she was not in that great shape at the Usopen last year but, then she had played more matches, beat better quality players and still lost to Mauresmo after running out of gas, this has not been the case this year.

I may think she will get safely into the third round, i think she´ll figure out a way to beat Mara and Krajicek, but the won´t have it enough to make it past Nadia.

Re: Serena's Draw - Not awful

I agree with whoever said this is really about getting past the first round. I'm worried about the Santangelo match. She was able to take Serena to 3 sets on grass back in '05 at Wimbledon. Different circumstances, but not much different, Serena wasn't in good shape and was very rusty, which unfortunately isn't much different now. The slower surface to me favors Santangelo as well as she doesn't have to worry as much that she'll just be blown off the court. I'm thinking Serena gets past Mara in 3 brutal sets, but who knows how much that'll take out of her for the rest of the tournie. Never count out a Williams' sister though.

Re: Serena's Draw - Not awful

When Serena isn't in shape anything is possible. It pains me to watch Serena lose to players that have no business beating her all because of her fitness.
