Here's how Serena fans can find out if she's serious...

...We need her to lose early in Australia. I hear ya - You're probably asking "what fan would possibly root for their fav to lose." SOme of you are also probably calling me that favorite 5 letter word, "TR--L". But listen for a hot minute. We can root for her to atleast reach the 3rd round as truly she doesn't need to lose anymore points. But if some how the draw breaks right, maybe the top player in her quarter gets upset or injured and Serena finds her old game for 1 magical match, it would do NOTHING for her motivation.

As a true fan (check my record and past posts), Serena needs to know her current state, fitness regimen & attitude wont work. Now I'll give her some leeway, given that she's been through more than most on the tour (major knee surgery, sisters death, custody battles, depression, recurring injuries and the latest being the Battles of the Sexes Court drama) Yet, it's time to pick up her stuff, get back in the race & conquer the world of tennis. She needs to find that commitment Roddick talked of when he said, he would see Venus & Serena practicing for HOURS! With that said, SHE MUST LOSE as ludicrous as I'm sure that sounds to many. Yes, another thread on Serena!

Re: Here's how Serena fans can find out if she's serious...

It's amazing the hope some Serena fans have.

The likelihood of Serena becoming a top slam contender again (let alone regain the #1 spot) is VERY low. With each bad loss and time off, the likelihood just keeps dropping.
Look at her fitness now. It's planets away from what it needs to be for Serena to play her A game.

When you have been at a certain level and then drop dramatically, it becomes much harder than it was initially to re-attain that level back.
Only very few people can ever achieve it, and it usually takes a total revamp of your outlook on life e.g Andre Agassi.

I actually believe Serena has what it takes to get back, but she may not be willing to put in the much extra effort it requires.

shut up I don't think Serena losing in another early round will help her. If losing to someone like Daniela in the 3rd round dind't work as motivation last year, it is not going to work this year. I truly believe that Serena wants it though.

If Serena hits the gym and gets her elite body back, she will be a top contender again. Serena wants more glory and I truly believe she's going to hit the gym and work hard and rise to the top again.

Re: Here's how Serena fans can find out if she's serious...

I agree with the point you are making. But I think on the other hand, though, it might be just good for her to find her old tennis in "1 magical match", since she will have been in touch with her tennis-self again and to a certain degree with her old best tennis, and this will generate real(istic) hope and believing in herself she can really do it again. The sooner she can make the connection, the better. I think this will just stimulate her motivation, and won't decrease her motivation.

Re: Here's how Serena fans can find out if she's serious...

A lot depends on her commitment indeed. The pictures we saw this week weren't very promising, and she does indeed need to be awakened, maybe Sybille just did that today. She looked scrappy from the first picture I saw her (in the car), the spark was not really there, she's just there to play some tennis, not more. She SAID she wanted to be number 1 again, yes, but I didn't see that fire on court, sadly.

Whatever it takes, I hope someone shakes her real good and she'll compete with the best again very soon. It's pretty sad to see her lose to the likes of Sybille Bammer. All due respect to the girl, but really, a Serena losing to Sybille is just... I wouldn't say pathetic, but it comes close.

I am NO fan of Serena's, btu I still love her wacko fashion, big racket, her fighting, her spark, and women's tennis would only benefit from a Serena on fire. The Serena she is now is just a mess compared and it's sad to see. Sorry fans.

I'm all alone with my delusions

I just don't see how she isn't in shape when she had the whole time after the us open to get fit and she got worse.

I agree with this comment. The key is whether or not Serena is willing to put in the effort. In my opinion, she needs a great motivating coach, and Nick B. isn't going to be it! Not just motivating her in tennis, but personally.

Hey, Martina N? You out there? Want a job? Connors worked for Roddick, and maybe Martina could be a positive on Serena?

I'm still looking for someone who saw Serena play in Australia this week. What was her fitness, speed, movement like? I know she's concerned with her serve (a real concern if its off).

Losing Australia would do zero for her confidence. What she needs is to seriously challenge in the AO, build up her confidence, which may in turn motivate her to work on her body and game.

Hope springs eternal, I know, but Andre Agassi beat the odds (with family issues, marital issues, image issues, etc). Why not Serena?

umm are you forgeting the more you doubt Serena the more she does it. I mean everyone has doubted her before and she has proved everyone wrong. So she did bad a little bit, each time serena loses its always oh she will never come back, but when someone else loses no one cares as much. I swear if any other player was 50 percent committed like her they would suck so bad. It took justine henin 100 percent to do what she has done last year. I beleive if serena was at least 80 percent she could do what justine can do and more. Jus give her time and she will get there.

GOOOOOOO Peng^^^^ Serena%%% Venus

Kimosabe speak with fork tongue.

If she has the ability to do it, why is hope among her fans amazing.

Of course Serena wants it. The question is whether she will do the work necessary to get it.

I also agree that it is possible for Serena to regain her former form, but it will require a change in her mental outlook and a willingness to dedicate herself to that goal, a la Agassi.

I'm not sure if that was a wake up because from her comments from the match Serena made it sound like she only lost because Sybille played out of her mind and in her words the match of her life and looking at the statistics she may be right but from what i hear it sounds as if Serena is just saying, "oh well she'll never play like that again and if she does she deserves to win" I nvr have heard her make a comment in that direction (since that isnt what she said exactly) i just think she should take a break from fashion and all that stuff and lift and train if she wants it as bad as she says then that shouldnt be hard and if she doesnt make time to do that then tennis isnt what she should pursue any longer because if she wants to be the best she has to start by acting like it and the best make time to practice i mean i LOVE serena buts its getting harder and harder watching her lose like this....................... here is here actual comment maybe i'm perceiving it wrong

"I think she played the match of her life," Williams said. "I've never heard of her quite frankly. I didn't play that well and I made a lot of unforced errors. I think I'm a little rusty. You wish these players would play like this all the time instead of just against me. She played unbelievable."
