my Hong Kong fan report! *wateva's report added*

I went for the first 3 days of the exhibition, had to skip the last day even though I had tickets

Opening Ceremony

All the players stood in a line and the organizer was blabbing on and on. A ballboy fainted in the background, and laid there on the ground. Svetlana and Maria, who were side by side, were talking to each other and pointing out about the ballboy . Kim, who was on the other side of Maria, was too busy making small talk with some organizer man to notice. When she finally noticed the ballboy, she then called out to Maria to look at the ballboy, which of course Maria already knew about, and Maria was nodding along, giving a “Yeah Kim, we were already talking about it” look, which was quite funny to see

Kim vs Jie

Kim’s serve was bad the whole match. She lost serve twice in the first set, but Jie didn’t sustain a high level of intensity enough to cope with her. Jie started off the second set pretty strongly, with some great shots, but Kim soon got back into gear and romped through the remaining games. But Kim’s numerous double faults proved to be a continuing point in her next few matches . She said her serve worked well during practice, but it was definitely not the case so during the match. Jie was the crowd favorite, so I looked quite silly at times being the only one clapping when Kim wins a point

Jie/Zi vs Elena/Caroline

Elena and Caroline came out looking like complete twins, with long blonde braided hair and roughly the same height. Even though Jie and Zi were obviously the favorites, Elena and Caroline started off pretty well, breaking Jie and Zi first, but allowed themselves to get broken back and soon lost momentum. I thought Caroline gave a very good account of herself during the match, definitely the better partner of her team and coming up with some great shots every now and then . Elena’s much maligned serve really didn’t look that weak from courtside . Elena and Caroline interacted quite well, lots of smiles, and Caroline herself has a really great smile, prompting the people beside me to comment that she is prettier than Sharapova . The Elena/Caroline team hit a ball that landed right into my hands. I wanted to keep the ball, but the ballboy came to my side and stared at me. I felt bad so I threw the ball back to him.

Svetlana vs Patty

I only caught the first set and the first 3 games of the second set, so what I saw was pretty much the time when Patty didn’t play well. She was practically non-existent during the first set , and just looked like she didn’t want to be there. She slightly picked up in the 2nd set, but I left before I saw how much she’d improved.

Maria vs Zi

This was expected to be an extremely lop-sided match, but it definitely wasn’t. Zi played pretty solidly throughout, and was especially amazing during the 2nd half of the first set, where she did very well in making up a two-break deficit against Maria to push the score to 5-5. Her serve was not a liability, and her shots left the crowd oohing and aahing at times . If she had been more consistent in the beginning of both sets, the score might be even closer. I kept looking over to Yuri Sharapov to see if there was any interaction between him and Maria, but there were none except some screams of encouragement

Kim/Svetlana vs Maria/Patty

The match started off and continued to be played in very good spirits. Both four players were making friendly banter with one another throughout the match . Even the crowd got involved with the appearance of the world’s most horrible umpire . In the first set, he called the wrong score three times in a close sequence. The first time, he was corrected by Maria, who joked by saying “I need a game!” after her serve was called 15-40 instead of 30-30 . The umpire refused to listen to her, and called 15-40 again in a manner that sounded like “I’m right” , until the crowd started shouting 30-30, before he finally corrected his mistake. The second time, he called the score 3-1 instead of 2-2, and was corrected by Kim and the crowd again. The third time, immediately after the 2nd mistake, the crowd started booing him very loudly. After he finally called the correct score the next time, the crowd sarcastically gave him a huge loud cheer and applause, with Kim following suit, clapping with her racquet and laughing very hard .

Maria and Patty surprisingly interacted very well during the match, chatting, laughing and patting each other on the back. During one point in the match when Patty’s serve kept deserting her, Patty was chiding herself and saying “Can’t pay a million bucks” . Team FILA was expectedly having a lot of fun, a lot of laughs and smiles, and clearly enjoying themselves a lot, and they really lifted each other up on their partners’ serves, although Svetlana seemed to tire out a bit towards the end of the match.

Nicole vs Zi

Nicole actually started off the match pretty positively, smiling after even lost points or unforced errors, and looking over at her box with a grin . But huge amount of unforced errors increased as the match continued on. Zi was solid throughout the match, and came up with brilliant shots and impressive serving. Nicole seemed to lose fight and it was clear who the winner would be. Zi really deserved this win with her great performances in both her singles matches. Nicole’s outfit looks very nice from afar, but looking clearly, the material used is extremely weird, somewhat like the material used for astronaut suits, or similar to something Iroda Tulyaganova wore last year . Nicole also kept tugging at her shirt and shorts inside her skirt after practically every point, which was quite unsightly.

Kim vs Patty

Kim’s serve was ATROCIOUS. It got so bad I was practically cringing after every missed first serve (which was very often) . Throughout her three matches, it was very obvious Kim was very fustrated with her serve, but it never improved. But other than the horrendous serving, when the match got past the serves, it was actually a very good match, with both Kim and Patty hitting very beautiful shots most of the time and making the match very nice to watch. The crowd was really enjoying this and giving huge applauses to each great shot hit.

Re: my Hong Kong fan report! *pics included*

now to my players' experiences:

Maria Sharapova

Didn’t see her at autograph sessions. Saw her on the practise courts after her win against Elena (not practicing, just walking on the court with her entourage). A huge crowd gathered outside waiting for her to come out. She came out and didn’t sign a single autograph before making her way straight into the physio room.

Svetlana Kuznetsova

Got her autograph twice, both during autograph sessions. So didn’t really bother her for more even when she walked past me or when I saw her on the practice courts (once practicing, the other time playing soccer). But seemed a very lovely girl

Kim Clijsters

REALLY NICE. No wonder I’ve been a fan of her for 6 and a half years . Got her autographs twice already during autograph sessions, but wanted to get a photo taken. So we (me and wateva) missed the Maria/Elena match to stake out the walkway between the practice court, physio room and media center. Kim with her dad walked really quickly into the barricaded media center. We called out to her across the barricade, and she didn’t hear us at first. But Daddy Clijsters heard us, and signaled to Kim to come over and take a photo with us . My camera failed, so I was only able to get a photo for wateva with Kim.

The second time, Kim was walking out of the media center herself, and I called out to her “Kim can I take a photo with you” and she was like “Sure” and so I finally got my photo taken (woohoo! ) and resulted in the other people crowding around her before she could get into the physio room. She then had a practise session with Caroline Maes and again when she came out, she was inundated with autograph and photo requests, and I got my third Kim autograph. She granted them all before going off, really lovely.

Elena Dementieva

Got her autograph during the autograph session. The security guards didn’t allow people to take photos with the players, but we got Elena to look in the direction of the camera and she was very smiley and patient and allowed us to get our photographs taken with her before moving on to sign the next autograph . But the few times I saw mummy Vera, she looked quite fierce

Re: my Hong Kong fan report! *pics included*

Patty Schnyder

A hardworking player, saw her quite a few times on the practice courts. Granted all requests after her practices, and also patiently waited for me to take a photo of her and wateva.

Nicole Vaidisova

Left pretty soon during her autograph session. The first two times she walked past us (there weren’t anyone else around), we called out to her but she didn’t respond. So the next two times she walked past us, we basically just gave up and ignored her . Didn’t sign for anyone else either

Zheng Jie

The first time we saw her, we took photos with her individually. She was very patient and waited for wateva’s camera to load, even talking to us “电池没电啦? but still waited till the camera was ready. The second time we met her, she also granted us our autograph requests. The third time during the same day when we went for her autograph session (seriously she must be so sick of seeing us ), she smiled at everyone before signing their autographs. Prettier in person

Yan Zi

Passed by us the first time when she was heading for her press conference, and signed for both of us, and took photos with the other people. The second time, we noticed her too late and couldn’t get photos taken

Caroline Wozniacki

Saw her coming, and went up to her to get an autograph, signed for us and joked with us if we also wanted the autograph of her hitting partner, a Hong Kong guy called David . It was not until people saw us going up to her did they also then go up to her for photos and autographs (They weren’t sure who she was). While she was hitting, someone even asked wateva who that girl was, so that he could also get an autograph

Thanks for the reports and pictures.

Caroline's very nice and I have experienced that myself.

Nicole was nice to me, but people continue to have bad experiences with her.

Some of the players might be able to recognise you and SH by now (Jie, Kim, Sveta, etc.).
