Mixed news for Classic
Bartoli in Auckland

Dec 27, 2006
Former French Open champion Anastasia Myskina arrived at Auckland to the pouring rain in preparation for the ASB Classic starting next week.
The current world No16, who has been as high as No2 in February 2004, comes to Auckland for the first time and will be seeded second behind No12 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia.
But the Russian doesn't mind that Jankovic, Marion Bartoli and Daniela Hantuchova are also ranked in the top-20 and will be stern competition for the event which starts January 1 and will be live on TV ONE and on tvnz.co.nz.
"It's good for me that there are top-20 players. I need those matches at the beginning of the year. Everyone is tough. I've never played here before and I wanted to try something different," said the Russian

"I've been practicing really hard and running a lot in preparation for the start of the year. Every time I start the year different. Last year was okay, maybe this year will be good," said Myskina, who was the first Russian to win a Grand Slam singles title when she won the French Open at Roland Garros in 2004.
She also was the first Russian to be ranked in the top five rankings and now has a total of 10 WTA singles titles to her credit.
In 2006 she did not win a title, but was a beaten finalist on three occasions - Istanbul, Eastbourne and Stockholm. She also made the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

Re: Myskina arrives in NZ

I reckon Myskina could do quite well here, she will certainly have the crowd on her side all the way

Thank you for everything Mercedes, now please be nice to Socrates for me, perhaps fetch him a bird or two. We love you, always.

Re: Myskina arrives in NZ

Nastya seems focused and motivated which is a good thing!

She has to do well here to secure a top 16 seed at the AO
Then she has quite a lot of points to defend at the AO and Tokyo!

Her goal for the year should be to qualify for the YEC or to finish the year in the top 10 at least

Anastasia Myskina

Radwanska - S. Williams - V. Williams - Kerber

Re: Myskina arrives in NZ

Myskina eyes New Year revolution
2006-12-27 13:06 Anastasia Myskina has arrived in New Zealand to prepare for upcoming tournaments as she targets a place back in the world's top ten.The Russian has suffered a couple of disappointing years after winning the French Open in 2004, with quarter-final appearances at Wimbledon her best displays in the Grand Slams in 2005 and 2006.
Myskina was as high as number two in the world rankings in February 2004, but after her poor run has now slipped to world number 16. But the 25-year-old is seeking a return to form in the New Year, starting with next week's ASB Classic in New Zealand before turning her attentions to the Australian Open.

Speaking to TVNZ on her arrival in Auckland, Myskina said: "It's good for me that there are top-20 players (at the ASB Classic). I need those matches at the beginning of the year.

"I've been practicing really hard and running a lot in preparation for the start of the year. Every time I start the year different. Last year was okay, maybe this year will be good."

Nastya was #2 later in 2004, not Feb
