Wheelchair Tennis Player Karic Hit With Two-Year Doping Suspension

Wheelchair Tennis Player Karic Hit With Two-Year Doping Suspension

By Tennis Week
12/21/2006

Meliha Karic, a 27-year-old wheelchair tennis player from France, has been suspended for two years for doping offense, The International Tennis Federation announced today.

The independent Anti-Doping Tribunal ruled that Karic tested positive for the stimulant adrafinil or modafinil metabolite on July 25 at the British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Nottingham, England.

Adrafanil or modafinil metabolite is classified by the WADA Code and the Tennis Anti- Doping Program as a stimulant.

The 36th-ranked Karic is eligible to return to tournament tennis on July 24, 2008. The Tribunal ruled her British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships results should be disqualified with loss of ranking points and prize money.

Karic, who became a paraplegic in or about 1993 after suffering tragic injuries in Sarajevo from a bomb, during the conflict in the former Yugoslavia, began taking prescribed medication in 1998 that contained adrafanil. On Jan. 1, 2004, adrafinil, modafinil and metabolites became prohibited substances under tennis' anti-doping rules. Karic did not realize her medication contained the banned substance; neither Karic nor her doctor, Dr. Damien Foucault, understood the stimulant in the medication was a banned substance. Karic does not speak or write English.

The Tribunal's investigation revealed that " It appears that neither [the doctor, coach] nor the player thought to enquire into this question [if the medication contained banned substances], nor to apply for a therapeutic use exemption ("TUE") in respect of the player’s use of adrafinil or modafinil.

The Tribunal found that "there had been no intent in this case to enhance performance by the taking of adrafinil or modafinil metabolite as part of the player’s medication. However, the player was found to be at fault for failing to take personal responsibility to ensure that the medication was permitted under the anti-doping rules."

No intent to enhance performance but a two year ban because she should have known. Uh, okay...not.

I know that's harsh, but rules are rules. The Anti-Doping Program clearly states that the athlete is responsible for what they put in their body. It also allows for the legitimate medical use of banned substances; the athlete must fill out a Therapeutic Use Exemption form and show proof (basically, a note from their doctor) that they are using the banned substance for medical reasons. If they were to make an exception for Ms. Karic, every able-bodied athlete who was ever suspended will at least appeal, if not sue.
