Canberra Classic?

Whatever happened to the Canberra Classic. It was a Tier IV tournament (I think) and was run at the same time as the Sydney and Hobart. I noticed it isn't on this year. Has it been kicked off the calender?

Will the points which players gained from the Canberra Classic last year be taken away?

Re: Canberra Classic?

It was cancelled after this year, and yes of course the points the players earnt from it this year will come off - when it comes around to that week in Jan again (all ranking points stay on for 52 weeks - doesn't matter if a tourney gets cancelled or not, the points stay on until the corresponding week of the following year). Hobart got lucky with this, because it now gets a bit stronger draw.

Yeah - too bad that it's not a 48 draw though like it was going to be.

Not enough $$$ one would assume. Especially as the number of spectators per day was generally less than 50.

But hardly surprising - it was on in the same week as Sydney, which is 1.5 hours up the road (not far by Aussie standards - for those non Aussie's reading), and it's a Tier 4. If you had the choice, would you rather go to Sydney with heaps of good players, or go to Canberra with maybe 1 from the top 20? I went to Canberra 2ce - but only coz Patty played one year, and the other year... I dunno who played - oh wait, I went with a German friend who was a fan of some of the players playing. But seriously, on the days I was there they would have been lucky to have 50 people there ,and then some of them were probably sponsors.

Hobart thisy ear had way more people than I had even seen at Canberra. I'm not sure why, but I guess because if you live near Canberra, and wanted to go to the tennis, you'd probably choose to go to Sydney instead, whereas if you live in Tassie (or Melbourne perhaps ), you'd go to Hobart.

all good points there. couldn't think of any big names that played in canberra this year & the only one I could think of in 2005 was ivanovic, but she wasn't that big of a star at the time though. so therefore it's disappointing for the organisers to see the tournament go but if a tournament only has an attendance of 50 ppl in a span of a few years then it must be cut off.

hobart mind you will be spectacular (providing that players like serena, chaky & misa don't withdraw) & will guarantee at least more than 50 ppl for sure.

You must drive too fast on the road! To Canberra from Sydney is like 4-5 hours.

Re: Canberra Classic?

Taswegians are sports-mad, most of their sporting events are well supported, particularly AFL football. Whereas ACT struggles for crowds, apart from the rugby. Some of their population comes from the public service, and they don't seem to generate a sporting culture like other states. Makes sense to increase Hobart if ACT can't generate the support.

There's more to life than just being happy.

Re: Canberra Classic?

Im not far from Canberra. It's just that the city can't support such an event. It had money troubles from day one - considering it was late with it's winner cheque to JHH in it's first year. That same year which was 2001, was supposed to be Mary Pierces comeback event, she ended up losing to some old french bitty in the semis. In terms of the Sydney event, the only reason why people see that event over the Canberra one is becuase it's at our olympic park which makes it somehow 'better' - and the fact that it has higher ranked players. But yeah, Canberra flopped because it has no international airport, it's a crap city, it's in the middle of no-where and most of the people that live there are public servants (which means that everyone is most likely working). Basically Canberra is just the politicians city... nothing more.

Or you must drive too slow. So maybe I should say 2.5 hours then!
