Sania Mirza's commitment to represent India in the Hopman Cup has forced her to withdraw from the ASB Classic, which begins on January 1 in Auckland, New Zealand. The Hopman Cup mixed team exhibition starts on December 30 in Perth, Australia. Auckland tournament officials said the WTA Tour did not inform them of the Tour's existing agreement with the Hopman Cup when the ASB Classic initially announced its entry list with Mirza on it

"As tournament organizers we're extremely disappointed by the decision and have received an apology from the WTA for the miscommunication and the late notice," said ASB Classic tournament director Richard Palmer. "The fact this has happened highlights an area which the WTA needs to take a serious look at. Players taking part in exhibitions or non tour events in the same week as WTA sanctioned events is an issue which all tournaments are concerned about. Tournaments should take priority. It’s obviously a shame to miss out on Sania. There has been a lot of interest particularly from the Indian community in Auckland. However we still have the best field ever with four players in the top-20 and tickets sales are reflecting the quality of the field."
U.S. Open semifinalist Jelena Jankovic, ranked No. 12, former French Open champion Anastasia Myskina (No. 16), Marion Bartoli (No. 17) and Daniela Hantuchova (No. 18) lead the Auckland field. American veteran Jill Craybas, 74th-ranked Emma Laine of Finland and 76th-ranked Camille Pin have joined the field for the tournament, scheduled for January 1-6 at the ASB Tennis Centre.

Auckland is never going to take priority over the Hopman Cup for anyone to be blunt

Is Mirza taking a break anytime soon?
She's playing right now. She's 66th in the world.
I just have a feeling she's going to have an early season burnout.

She could be like Alicia Molik and actually develop her game faster by playing for her country but Sania has a tendency to get sprains if she plays too much.

"Everybody always said I didn't get that job because my wife is white. If you're not strong enough to look through that then you have the issue."

Pity, but not exactly a surprise.

Richard was surprised about this, just last week he was re-assuring me that Sania will be in Auckland

Thank you for everything Mercedes, now please be nice to Socrates for me, perhaps fetch him a bird or two. We love you, always.

Richard Palmer and the rest of the Auckland team didnt (well I did ask him last week but he thought I was confused with another player).

How much does she get fined for this? She's not injured, and she already committed to Aukland.

Zilch, it seems.

WTA apparently has an arrangement with Hopman Cup organisers that it took precedence over ASB classic.

Re: Mirza Withdraws From Auckland To Play Hopman Cup

I think in Sania's circumstance, they could've made an exemption anyway. She didn't know whether or not India would definitely qualify for the Hopman Cup, but just in case they didn't, she had to have a back-up plan. As a fully ITF-sanctioned event, playing the Hopman Cup is given equal consideration as Davis Cup and Fed Cup. While it's status is not as prestigious yet, it has been given equal footing. So if a player wants to play for their country in an officially recognized tournament, it should definitely take precedence over a tournament, especially a Tier 4.

"I'm really feeling my balls" - Serena Williams
"She had him in her box... It made his week!" - Tracy Austin
"Tell us Rafa, what else do you do with your right hand?" - Todd Woodbridge
"I have a pain here, in my famous ass" - Rafael Nadal
