Jenny Hopkins And Taylor Dent To Marry

"Interestingly, both Dent and Fish have cause for celebration this weekend: Dent is scheduled to marry long-time girlfriend and former WTA pro Jenny Hopkins near their Florida home on December 8; Fish will kick-off a three-day birthday celebration of tennis and music on the same day to benefit the Mardy Fish Foundation charity with Mardy's Tennis & Jake's Music Fest at the Boulevard Village & Tennis Club in Fish's hometown of Vero Beach, Florida".

Re: Jenny Hopkins And Taylor Dent To Marry

I remember Jennifer when she played doubles with Martina Hingis during her WTT debut in 2005 and she was a pleasant surprise as she was really good partner for Martina as their NY Sportstime team won the year-end Championship...I'm sure Martina is pleased for Jennifer and wishes her the best!

She is teamed in doubles with Mashona vs. Patty/Babsi

One more coincidence is I got a pic with Taylor last year's US Open.

Re: Jenny Hopkins And Taylor Dent To Marry

=============

Last Man Standing: Taylor Dent Coming off his third tour title and disposing of the world's number one ranked Juan Carlos Ferrero along the way, Taylor Dent is emerging from the pack of young Americans as the next most promising player. Son of former Australian Davis Cup player, Phil Dent, and former tour player Bettyann Grubb Stuart, he possesses one of the best serve and volley games around. As a tour player myself, I was able to capture the following exclusive interview with Taylor on September 3, 2003, while he was awaiting his semifinal match at the Kremlin Cup Tournament in Moscow.
Jenny Hopkins: In 5 words, describe yourself as a player.

Taylor Dent: hmmm...Aggressive, Volleyer, Attacker, Perfectionist, Impatient

Jenny Hopkins: The serve and volley era of years ago has been somewhat pushed into the background lately due to the evolution of power baseliners using mega-powered racquets. What made you choose this kind of game?
Taylor Dent: My dad and I decided it was going to take more to become the great player I wanted to be so I became a serve and volleyer when I turned professional at 18. I'm a big guy with a big serve and I've got great touch around the net so it was a very natural transition. I think if I can master the art of serving and volleying, I will be extremely tough to beat. It's the way I enjoy playing, like Patrick Rafter, a fellow Aussie whose intensity was unbelievable. He was such a gutsy player.
Jenny Hopkins: Speaking of your father and knowing that you and he are the only father and son to have ever won ATP tournament titles in the Open Era, what is your relationship like?
Taylor Dent: My dad and I have an unbelievable relationship. Not only are we great as father and son, but we're also buddies. We can laugh at each other and have fun and I wouldn't trade our relationship for anything in the world.

Jenny Hopkins: In your 3 ATP championships you beat some pretty talented guys like James Blake, Mark Philippoussis, Andy Roddick and most recently number 1 ranked Juan Carlos Ferrero. Which match had you playing your best game?
Taylor Dent: The matches were so different that it's hard to compare. I think I played my very best against Andy in the finals of Memphis. I returned extremely well and volleyed great and when I volley well I am very tough to beat. I didn't return as well against Juan Carlos in the finals of Bangkok, and had to grind out more points. In both matches I really concentrated on holding my serve and serving accurately. If I could improve one thing on my serve it would be to have better placement. Take Sampras for example. I practiced with him a lot and his ability to hit the spots was uncanny.

Jenny Hopkins: While we're on the topic of serves, do you think that players will ever be able to serve at speeds of 150 mph or more? (Taylor's best was 144mph at Wimbledon 2001)
Taylor Dent: Definitely! Sooner or later. All the guys on the tour are so fitness conscious and strong these days. With lighter and more powerful racquets it's only a matter of time before someone cracks the barrier.

JH: You have a perfect record going into finals, an impressive 3-0. To what do you attribute your success in championship matches?
Taylor Dent: Partly luck, but I suppose my focus increases as I get deeper into tournaments. I try to concentrate harder with each match.

Jenny Hopkins: Win or lose, what is the best and most memorable match you have played in your tennis career so far?
Taylor Dent: Probably the one against Lleyton at Wimby a few years ago. It was center court there and I had a very good chance to win the match...it was unlike anything else I've experienced before.

Jenny Hopkins: You have had some great coaches. What was the most important thing that each coach brought to your game?
Taylor Dent: My dad, was the one who showed me how to play. He taught me my technique and style. Eliot Teltscher really helped me understand that there is nothing else in the world that I would rather do. I think I owe my love of the game to him. Paul Kilderry opened my eyes to how hard people are working on the tour. And Brad Stine helped me understand the tactics of the game and the mental side. I think it's huge to have a coach that you believe in. He is your unemotional eyes. Sometimes as a player you are blinded because of emotion, and a good coach will help you see clearly.

Jenny Hopkins: Have you made any changes in your training routine recently that have really helped you?
Taylor Dent: I just hired a fitness trainer to travel with me full time and all we've been concentrating on is my speed and explosion. I'm moving better now than I ever have before and I can run down every ball, so I don't feel the pressure to hit good shots all the time.

Jenny Hopkins: Do you do any crosstraining?
Taylor Dent: I love basketball, but it's too dangerous. The few times I've played, it seems I'm the only one who did not get hurt. I've also picked up volleyball because my cousin, Misty May, is a professional beach volleyball player, but I must admit I'm pretty terrible. Any other sport is a fun change.

Jenny Hopkins: Which of the four grand slam events is your favorite and why?
Taylor Dent: Wimbledon. I love the atmosphere and the energy there. It's unique. There's so much tradition and people truly cherish the two weeks out of the year when Wimbledon takes place.

Jenny Hopkins: You were very impressive in your match with Agassi at the US Open. After taking the first set and having an early break in the second, you definitely looked in control of the match. Did the rain delays have something to do with your injury?
Taylor Dent: They did and they didn't. I actually hurt my leg in the end of my match against Fernando Gonzalez the round before and I was doing everything possible to try to fix it on the days off. I could feel it from the first set on against Agassi and the more times we had to break for rain, the worse it got.

Jenny Hopkins: Everyone who has watched you play has felt the intensity and passion that you have for tennis. I hear that you are very committed to helping the ATP Tour promote the game. What do you think needs to be done to elevate tennis to the same level of popularity that soccer has in Europe and football has in America?
Taylor Dent: It's all about promotion. We need to get the average person to watch tennis so that they know how good everyone is and who all the players are. The best example I can come up with is the NBA. Take the 35th ranked NBA player, everyone knows who he is. Now look at the 35th ranked ATP player. No one has a clue who he is unless maybe he's from the same country. If you put Andy Roddick in more commercials, more people will be able to identify him. Put Brian Vahaly, a top 100 player with fewer accomplishments, in more commercials, and I guarantee his popularity will sky rocket as well. It's all about promoting the game and putting our guys in the public eye more often.

Jenny Hopkins: On a personal note, do you have any nicknames?
Taylor Dent: "Tails." Everyone calls me Tails except for Robby Ginepri and Levar Harper-Griffith. They call me "TDiddy."

Jenny Hopkins: What types of music turn you on and what type of food do you love to indulge in?
Taylor Dent: My favorite song of all time is "Don't Cry" by Guns N' Roses, and I've got White Stripes in my CD player right now. I've been known to pay homage to Papa John's Pizza, but nothing would beat a Carl's, Jr. Burger right now.

Jenny Hopkins: What type of movies do you enjoy watching? Do you have a favorite movie? If you could pick a character from any film who would best depict you, who would it be and why?
Taylor Dent: I enjoy movies with good acting. My favorite actors are Denzel Washington and Kevin Spacey and some of my favorite movies are of course, Training Day, K-Pax, and Usual Suspects. As far as a character in a movie, I see myself most like Rocky. I've taken my beatings but I'm still grinding away.

Jenny Hopkins: Do you remember your most embarrassing moment?
Taylor Dent: Well, I remember my most embarrassing moment on the court was when I played Max Mirnyi at Indian Wells a while ago. I had received a wildcard and when I went out to play I couldn't find the court. I ended up playing so badly and I was so embarrassed because the stands were packed with a lot of people I knew.

Jenny Hopkins: What is your most prized possession?
Taylor Dent: I don't have one yet, but when I buy my first house it will definitely be my most prized possession.

Jenny Hopkins: Do you have any pets?
Taylor Dent: I have a beautiful cuddly dog named Sheila. She's a pitbull.

Jenny Hopkins: If you are not on the road playing tournaments what does your typical day consist of? Do you have any hobbies?
Taylor Dent: I love home construction. Don't tell anyone but my new favorite TV program is HGTV. I have taken over my dad's house and I'm currently in the process of renovating it.

JH: How do you approach your tennis from the standpoint of balancing your career with personal life?
Taylor Dent: For me it's easy, I look at it like this...I have only about 9 or so years left to play the sport I love and chase my dreams, so I am going to give everything I've got until I'm a broken down man. So tennis is first and then I make time for friends around that.

Jenny Hopkins: Picture yourself in the finals of the US Open, the biggest event of your life and tennis career. Who would you want to be playing against?
Taylor Dent: Some 3.0 hacker at the local club!

Jenny Hopkins: To end this interview, I thought I'd turn the tables and have you ask me the last question.
Taylor Dent: Alright. How would you describe me in 5 words?
Jenny Hopkins: Competitive, Honest, Generous, Funny, Handsome (not necessarily in that order)
