Name players destined for greatness if they got in better shape.

We often mention on this board about players we think would be big stars if they got in the gym and got their bodies to match the talent they possess.

Romina Oprandi, Galina Fokina, Alisa Kleybanova, Ahsha Rolle and Akgul Amanmuradova are often mentioned as great talents that should be setting the world on fire with their tennis, if only they looked like better athletes.

But would they really be dominating players even if they spent hours in training? Are there other big talents out there that need more than just excellent tennis skills?

It's the off season folks so lets discuss.

plenty of players could improve their movement around the court. its not that they look slow, but just a bit uncomfortable.
if nicole vaidisova could move better she would be challenging for grand slams.
if michaela krajicek lost weight she wouldn't lose first round all the time.
if viktoria azarenka was quicker and more agile she would translate her form from juniors into form in seniors.

People always want to mention Myriam but I have wondered that despite her health issues if she couldn't have changed something in her training to have made her a force on tour.

I think if Azarenka didnt try to hit the ball for a winner on every shot she would be better

I would say Rezai needs to improve her fitness and movement then she will move into top 30 then top 20 and higher

Serena Williams needs to lose about 50kg if she is ever to get into the Top 50 again

Maybe Sharapova would be better if she got into shape.

Re: Name players destined for greatness if they got in better shape.

Well Lindsay Davenport, Mary Pierce and Martina Hingis prove that, however much working out a player undertakes, there is always a limit to how much they can improve. To be an athlete, you have to be a born athlete.

Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati often looked like they needed to lose 14lbs or more. They were both great players, so one wonders what they could have achieved with some discipline. Maybe they wouldn't have incurred so many injuries.

Others that spring to mind: Tanasugarn, Casanova, Serena Williams, Rezai.

To be honest, there aren't many corpulent players on the women's tour now. It makes us realise how athletic the sport has become.

Controversially, because they are rarely acknowledged as being over weight, I think these players could lose maybe 7lbs for their own benefit:

Kuznetsova
Venus Williams (she's not as svelte as she once was)
Petrova
Clijsters

That's simple.

Jelena Jankovic.

Her natural talent and athletic ability is the best on tour IMO. And no, she doesn't train.

Women's tennis sucks.

Go Rafa.

Kanepi, uhm...

And Petrova needs to get her act together, her display at the masters was a real disgrace.

I'm all alone with my delusions
