Jennifer Capriati: One of the greatest players to never win the US Open?

She has had such great results at the US Open, but never got to the final. She really plays well there, until the semifinals where it just doesn't seem to be enough. I think she was one of the greatest to never win there, she got around 4 semifinals.

Can anyone think of any other players that would deserve to win a certain slam, but never did.

4 semis, including 3 third set tiebreak losses.

dementieva + sharapova + bartoli + chakvetadze

To be honest, I can't think of a female player who hasn't won it that deserves it more.

Same with Hingis and the French.

Evonne Goolagong comes to mind. Didn't she lose 4 finals in a row there?

Dementieva has a final and two semis, as well as a QF show, but she doesn't have the slam factor that Jcap had in others.
Pierce has the slam success, but her success at the tourny itself is limited to that one showing.
Martinez had back to back Semis losing to seles.
Mauresmo has both the "other standard greatness" and consitent great results there.
she might be your challenge.

but that's only out of the latest girls on block.
the others have wither a) won it, b) don't come any close to Jcap at the greatness/us success factors.

but evonne takes the overall open era tourny easily. i ain't remembering others right now.
sukova probably tops jennifer as well.
perhaps even novotna.
shriver also has a strong case.

if you have nothing important to say, please do so in non-tennis forum. if you have something you think is important, but is actually rubbish regarding anything other than tennis - please do so in the non-tennis forum. if you have something tennis related to say, but it's actually "OMG, X player is so h0t!1" or "who has the biggest boobs on the wtatour" please do so in menstennisforum, under "wta forum". if you have something important, tennis-related and interesting to say please do so. No one in the world can understand how much tennis means to someone, except another fan.

Re: Jennifer Capriati: One of the greatest players to never win the US Open?

First thing I thought was BORG.

But yes, Capriati was on the losing end of three unforgettable semifinals. Seles1991 and Henin-Hardenne2003 are among the highest quality matches I can remember. People still talk about the disbelief people had watching the 17-year old Seles and 15-year old Capriati hit so hard and so precisely. Dementieva2004 was lower quality, but still dramatic.

It would have been fitting for her to win it one of those years, but I guess the tiebreak gods did not agree.

Evonne Goolagong, then Capriati. Of the men, Borg.
