Why I Love Martina Hingis
I got to thinking the other day about what were the WTA matches I've seen that contained the most drama? - multiple breaks, several momentum shifts, contested line calls, amazing rallies, both players rising to the occasion, umpires getting involved, crowds going nuts, and I came up with the following:
RG F 99: Graf d. Hingis 4-6 7-5 6-2
AO QF 01: Hingis d. Serena 6-3 2-6 8-6
W QF 00: Venus d. Hingis 6-3 4-6 6-4
US SF 99: Hingis d. Venus 6-1 4-6 6-3
US SF 00: Venus d. Hingis 4-6 6-3 7-5
W F 93: Graf d. Novotna 7-6 1-6 6-4
US SF 03: Henin-Hardenne d. Capriati 4-6 7-5 7-6
AO F 02: Capriati d. Hingis 4-6 7-6 6-2
AO F 00: Davenport d. Hingis 6-1 7-5 (amazing second set)
Zurich 01 F: Hingis d. Davenport 6-4 4-6 7-5
US 4R 96: Hingis d. Sanchez-Vicario 6-1 3-6 6-4
And I realised just why Hingis is so great. Something about the way she plays forces the other players to be more creative and savvy, to use aspects of their game, and shots that they wouldn't nomally use so readily, and whether she wins or loses, the matches she plays are normally great ones.
So pleased she came bacK!
