Clijsters declines 2008 Olympic offer; reiterates retirement plans

Clijsters declines 2008 Olympic offer; reiterates retirement plans November 14, 2006

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Kim Clijsters declined an offer from the Belgian Olympic Committee on Tuesday to compete in the 2008 Beijing Games -- instead insisting she will retire from tennis next year.
"It is a superfluous question," she said on her Web site. "When I take a decision, I stick to it."

The 23-year-old Belgian, who has battled an assortment of injuries the past few years, returned from a wrist ailment two weeks ago to win the Gaz de France Stars. She also reached the semifinals of the WTA Championship and finished the year ranked fifth."To get into the semifinals after a layoff of more than two months is not that easy," Clijsters said.
Clijsters said she will play in "fun tournaments to be able to say goodbye to the many people I met over the years" in 2007 without naming any specific events.

WOW!

I actually have a lot of respect for Kim for taking this the way she wants to take it.

Not holding herself to standards of other girls - really controlling her own destiny.

I mean it's a shame she wont participate in such an amazing event but hey - to each his own!

Respect isn't really the first thing that comes to my mind.
Most athletes are willing to sacrifice a lot to be able to represent
their country at the Olympics. It's a honour for them to be
elected to play and win for their country!

But not so for Kim Clijsters.
She seems to be one of those very rare exceptions who
simply doesn't even care. Not in 2004 and not in 2008.
Unbelievable.
Being a Belgian myself, I almost feel insulted by so much indifference
from one of our best athletes.

But, so be it. I'm not gonna spend anymore thoughts on the matter.
Kim is what she is, and she aint no Justine.

Why would the Belgian Olympic Committee be signing people up NOW?

Re: Clijsters declines 2008 Olympic offer; reiterates retirement plans

I think that Kim should reconsider playing the 2008 Olympic Games and playing beyond 2007 in general. If she sticks around longer, she can add more grand slams and an Olympic medal (preferably gold) to her trophy collection. But I guess if her body can't stand the wear & tear, then may be she should not play or perhaps she should play less tournaments like Lindsay Davenport (Kim's injuries are not the same as Lindsay's). Who knows???

Kims life is not public property is it? If she feels like starting a family then she has every right to decide just that no? I mean, I would much rather have here around longer but not if that's not what makes her happy though ...

I think it's more about her heart and mind than her body - not that her injuries aren't real, but as you said, she could scale back.

I'd also be willing to be that once she does retire, she'll miss it and regret her decision. Perhaps she should have a nice, long chat with Miss Hingis before she finalizes her plans.

I think she wants to pop out two kids in a year and a half and then after the youngest is a year or two......then think about a comeback to the tour. She's ready to start that part of her life and she has made enough money to take care of herself and her family for the rest of theirs lives, she can retire when she wants to. In other words, I'm jealous as hell.

At the end of the day, Kim is a human being, not property of the state. She has done right by Belgium with her talent for years and she has earned her family time.

Ultimately everybody has to decide what is best for them, and Kim should be no exception.

Re: Clijsters declines 2008 Olympic offer; reiterates retirement plans

As much as I regret her taking that decision, it's better this way. She's retiring while she's still at the top, she's retiring when she still likes the game... And if what she wants is really to retire and have kids etc etc, who are we to say she's stupid not to? She's built up a nice career as it is now! But I doubt she'll ever come back though, she's so firm and clear about it, she'll stop after 2007, end of story...

Let's hope she makes the best of it and thanks for the years you've given us Kim

It's indeed very weird, they also promised her a lot more money... As if money has anything to do with it... Anyway. I DO regret her not playing for Belgium in the olympics though, that goes withotu saying

Maybe they asked her this soon to persuade her not to retire in 2007?

I think Kim did a lot for belgium.why to criticize the fact she's going to retire from tennis that has nothing to do with th Olympics Games?

Euh... because we are not exactly rich in athletes who can win a medal...

Basically, Belgium rarely wins anything in any sport (OK, we've won some big prices but it is really rare). That's why the whole country has been going bananas over and over again over the fact that we had not just one but actually TWO of the best tennis women in the world over the last years.
I think every Belgian feels blessed to witness this incredible situation.

2000-2007: My "Kim years". My best years as a tennis fan. A few bitter losses but a lot of great matches and great wins. Thank you, Kim Clijsters!
26.03.2009: More Kim years to come!
